Secretaries Report

January 2018

The NUT and ATL Sections are working well together. The secretaries have had the first joint meeting to begin to tackle the transition process and Bob Groome (ATL Secretary) was welcomed to the November NUT OGM.Membership is up on this time last year, which is an excellent result for the new union and both sections have benefitted with reps from the other section stepping forward to represent all the NEU members in their schools.

The Teachers Choice website continues to promote improvement in conditions for teachers in Norfolk schools and teachers continue to report how much they value it as a resource. Norfolk have contributed to a composite motion to National Conference which, if it gets on the agenda, will ask the Executive to consider rolling the website (or something similar) out nationally.

The number of schools becoming academies has slowed, reflecting the fact that so many schools now have academy status, however we are now finding that some academies are moving from one Trust to another. We continue to work toward having all Trusts paying into facilities or recruiting and training reps in schools in those Trusts who do not pay to negotiate and do casework. We now have a number of these reps as well as our Norfolk caseworkers and as a result are planning our own in-house training for this term.

The Mental Health Course last term was a great success. The course was attended by all Norfolk’s caseworkers and several reps as well as some caseworkers from other unions (which helped minimise the expenses). Caseworkers now have much greater confidence in dealing with members who have mental health issues (frequently caused by work related stress).
