PROJECT: ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE - Fact Sheet / Brochure

DUE DATE: Thursday May 26th

BACKGROUND INFO: A healthy environment is an absolute necessity for the well-being of all organisms, including humans. All our needs, big and small are being met by the environment. Environmental issues are harmful effects of human activity on the biophysical environment. Environmentalism, a social and environmental movement, addresses environmental issues through advocacy, education and activism. For this project, you will select an environmental issue that is important to you. You are free to choose whichever environmental issue you want, research it, and then summarize the issue and its impact in a FACT SHEET OR BROCHURE. The fact sheet / brochure should include the following:

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

1) Description / Overview of Issue — A detailed description of the environmental issue. This section should include the causes of the problem (as currently understood by the scientific community).

2) Picture(s) – Select an image (or images) that illustrate or explain the problem. Place them strategically into your brochure / fact sheet.

3) Consequences / Statistics / Examples — What are the consequences (globally, locally) at the current time, as well as if this issue is left unaddressed in the future? Provide statistics and / or examples that support your claims.

4) Solutions – What are some potential solutions to the problem? Include things that can be done at a global / political level, all the way down to local / individual level.

5) Current Research – Find a scholarly journal (scientific journal), experiment from university/government, or science magazine (e.g. Scientific American, Discover, etc.) on your environmental issue of choice. Include a summary of the purpose, procedures, major findings, and recommendations for further study on the environmental issue.

6) CITATIONS: You need to have at least 4 sources for your project. If you use the internet as a source, make sure to only use credible sources such as a government or university site. Internet sites like Wikipedia are good places to start for information, but do not use them as one of your sources! Your four sources need to be included at the end of your paper, and must be in APA citation format. Attach your bibliography / citations to your brochure / fact sheet when you turn it in.

**1 of your 4 sources may be for pictures / images citation.

**NOTE: this is a fact sheet / brochure that is intended to convince others that your issue is important and deserves our attention! Make the reader understand your issue and want to support measures to fix it!

General Format Guidelines:

● Use a template for fact sheet or brochure – Microsoft WORD or Microsoft PUBLISHER (or download a template from online!)

● Divide into sections using the guidelines above

● APA style bibliography (go to WLHS library website). – attach to fact sheet / brochure
