GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT

August 2014

Dear Parents and Guardians:

We welcome you back, and we hope it will be a challenging and educationally rewarding year for your teenager.

On Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 8:00 AM,Secaucus High School will be offering the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). This test measures the verbal, math and writing skills that students have developed over the course of their education. For juniors only, the PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation Programs. It is also beneficial for freshmen and sophomores to take this test to get a head start on improving academic skills needed for college. In addition, it is a valuable tool to prepare your son/daughter for the SAT.

In December 2014, when test results are returned, the guidance counselors will meet with their counselees to interpret test results. At this time, the student score reports, as well as their actual test booklets will be given to them. Through a question-by-question review of answers, your son/daughter will be able to see which answers he/she answered correctly or incorrectly and will be able to refer to the original test booklet for additional practice. Students also receive a personalized statement of specific academic skills that need attention, along with suggested steps to improve those skills.

All juniors wishing to take the PSAT must register in Guidance no later than Monday, September 8, 2014. A twenty-dollar ($20) registration fee is required - cash only. After September 9th, space permitting, registration will be open for grades 9 and 10. All students must fill out the form below, and return it to the guidance office in order to register. Juniors must return the form by September 8, 2014, and grades 9 and 10 must return their forms by September 23, 2014.Upon registration, your child will receive a 2014Student Bulletin for the PSAT/NMSQT. We ask you to take some time to review the contents with your child. There are many valuable “hints” provided for each type of question included in the test. Also included is a practice test which we encourage your child to take prior to the actual testing date in school.

.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s guidance counselor.

******Students must be at the High School by 7:15 AM-7:30 AM

Sincerely,
