Searching for resources when visiting UQ

Searching the library catalogue can be done from home / school or at UQ.

When at UQ, log onto Library computers as a ‘Guest’ with username “libguest” & password “libguest”.

Getting started

What information are you seeking? Write down keywords from your assignment topic to use in your search. Also make a list of synonyms that you will be able to use as search terms.

Keywords / Synonyms

Search Tips

Phrase Search – words in exact order / Single letter replacement - at the end or within a word / Unlimited truncation – at end of stem word only
Use Quotation Marks – “ “ / Use Question Mark - ? / Use Asterisk - *
“ Rate of growth” / Wom?n = women or woman
Cat? = cat or cats / Marx*= Marx, Marxist, Marxism

Books

In UQ Library Search

Click on the drop down arrow and select “Physical items”

Enter your search terms from the table above

To limit to print books available in Social Sciences and Humanities Library, go to the limiters on the left hand side. Select Books, then select your chosen Library e.g. Social Sciences and Humanities Library (under Library location).

You can search on words like Australia* foreign policy or Australia* and econom* or fiscal policy and Australia* (use your own search terms from the table above).

Other options

Browse the shelves at the CALL NUMBERS indicated in your research

Use “UQ Search” to find SUBJECTS. Click on the book title, then click on one of the “Subjects”

Now add resources you have found.

In UQ Library Search

Click on the drop down arrow and select “Books”

Enter your search terms from the table above

To limit to available eBooks, go to the limiters on the left hand side. Select “Available onlineunder “Show only”

Accessing Online Journal Articles

In UQ Library Search

Click on the drop down arrow and select “Journal Articles”.

Use the keywords from the table above to search for articles. This defaults to ‘full text’.

Save articles to your USB

Access to Online Resources when not at UQ

Options for accessing online databases include:

  1. If your school subscribes to databases, you can access them at school (or home) through your Library network. See your Teacher Librarian or teacher for details and passwords
  1. Free access to online resources (eBooks and Journal articles) is available through your local Council Library or the State Library of Queensland. All residents of Qld can join the SLQ at:

Refer to the Keywords you listed previously to use as initial search terms. For example, you could search JSTOR, limiting the search to articles with full text, using a phrase such asAustralian foreign policyin a Keyword search.
