BSL National Plan

Tuesday 24 October 2017 was an important era for BSL Communities & Public Bodies in Scotland. The Scottish Government launched their British Sign Language (BSL) National Plan at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS).

This is Scotland's first BSL National Plan, as required by the BSL (Scotland) Act 2015. It sets out Scotland's ambition to be the best place in the world for BSL users to live, work and visit and it includes 70 actions we will take by 2020 to help us make progress towards this goal.

BSL versions (YouTube Channel):

Later in the evening, we celebrated the launch of the British Sign Language (BSL) National Plan at the Scottish National Gallery, The Mound. We would like to take the time to thank everyone who attended and we hope you enjoyed it. We hope you enjoyed the food, drink & cupcakes on the night.

Both SCoD and Derek would like to thank everyone, especially Mandy Reid for all the valuable hard work and contribution over the years in achieving the BSL (Scotland) Act 2015 and supporting us in getting Scotland’s first BSL National Plan.

End the Benefits Freeze Campaign – Letter to the Chancellor

Thank you supporting the joint letter to the Chancellor calling for an end to the benefit freeze. We are very pleased that we had gathered the support of 45 civil society organisations in a very short space of time.

I have attached the letter (we have decided not to use the signatures as not all were available), and a press release embargoed until tomorrow morning.

We will be using social media to promote the letter to the chancellor tomorrow, your support with that would be appreciated. We will also be pushing the petition that has been launched. We would very much appreciate your support with circulating it to your members and supporters:

We will also be planning other campaign activities in the run up to and after the Budget, as well as more work with MPs. We will, of course, keep you updated with progress and will seek to actively involve you in the next steps.

Scottish Crime and Justice Survey – 2018/19 Questionnaire Review

Dear Scottish Crime and Justice Survey user,

The Scottish Crime and Justice Survey Project Team are currently preparing the questionnaire for the 2018/19 survey, with fieldwork due to commence in April 2018.

As in previous years, this includes reviewing existing questionnaire content to ensure it remains relevant, up to date and meets the needs of users. We would like to invite users to provide any comments they may have on the survey for 2018/19 by Monday 13th November and have provided details on how to submit feedback on the SCJS web-pages, as well as a working copy of the 2017/18 questionnaire.

Questionnaire Development for 2018/19 and in future

In light of increasing demand for survey space, we also consider that there is an opportunity to use the survey more flexibly in future to better meet the needs of users. This can be achieved by beginning to rest and rotate survey content over time, and working with stakeholders to develop new content on other priority or emerging issues to fill any space arising.

We propose to begin to implement the approach of resting/rotating questions as part of the 2018/19 questionnaire .Based on previous feedback, we are working with stakeholders to develop questions on cyber-crime/online behaviours for the 2018/19 SCJS. In order to create space for these questions we are proposing to rest the existing sections on workplace abuse, fake and smuggled goods and the self-completion section on drug use.

More information on the specific proposals and how to provide comments can be found on our website.

Over the next few months we will also continue our on-going engagement with stakeholders to identify areas of the questionnaire or topics not currently covered which may be candidates for more detailed development work and inclusion in future to inform our work plan for the next year or so around future questionnaire content. Again, we would welcome user feedback and suggestions to help develop our plans.

Other SCJS Updates

  • We will shortly be publishing a summary of user feedback to our recent consultation on future reporting of the SCJS.
  • The 2016/17 SCJS results are expected to be published in early 2018. We will confirm a more specific date in due course

VAF is now inviting applications to this new fund from Glasgow Health and Social Care Partnership to tackle social isolation and sustain the well-being of vulnerable Glasgow City Council residents.

Third sector organisations with an annual income of under £250,000 (see criteria for further detail) are being urged to apply to the Fund. They can apply for up to £30,000 to carry out activities over a 12-month period that will help to build connectedness and make a real difference to the quality of life for some of the most vulnerable adults in Glasgow.

The outcomes for the Wellbeing for Longer in Glasgow Fund are to:

  • Address health inequalities and improve health
  • Improve social inclusion, enabling residents who are isolated to be more connected

Priority will be given to projects working with adults with multiple complex health needs/barriers which contribute to isolation including physical, sensory and mental health barriers.

Applications should be submitted using the online application form by Friday 01 December 2017.

Please see the attached information flyer, or visit our website for further information about the fund and how to apply:

Please also forward this email to people within your networks who may be interested in this new fund and feel free to upload the information onto your website, include the details in your newsletter and/or post on your social media pages as appropriate.

An intimate, interactive and fun-filled festive show for little ones aged up to 7 years

It’s the night before Christmas, and seven excited siblings are tucked up together cosy in bed. But who can sleep when Santa’s on his way? Maybe singing some festive carols will help – but only if they don’t wake Mum and Dad!

Suitable for children aged up to 7 years.

Tinsel Toon is full of lovely wee streets. Lots of different people for you to meet. Good morning. Good afternoon. How do you do? It’s nice to be nice. It’s good to see you. Lending a hand or helping one another out. That’s what the Christmas spirit is all about.
