SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT TIMELINE
The following timeline is our best estimate as teachers of due dates for various aspects of the science fair project. Pay attention in class as actual due dates may vary.
Remember to keep a written log of everything you do concerning your project, even if you change courses you should have written notes of all of your information! I have seen BYU give $50 cash for the best science fair logs!
September 29th Choose a science problem to solve, write in the form of a question. Write 3 possible questions, star the one you want to do most and I will mark the one you will have the best chance of winning on. Remember if you want to compete at BYU your idea needs to be original and solve a real world problem.
October 18th Submit a research plan, include your problem, words to research, your procedure (independent and dependent variables and as many controlled variables as possible) and a sketch of what information you will collect on a data table and shown on a graph.
November 20th Write a 1 page summary of your research involving your topic, add a bibliography including at least 3 valid references. Your actual research paper will be much longer. Usually 3 – 10 pages.
December – work on your project the entire month if you haven’t been already. A great project isn’t done in a day.
Jan 6th Progress check – you should be well into your experiment if not finished by now!
January 12thScience fair notebook due. Include: Title page, abstract, problem, research, hypothesis, procedure, observations and data, graphs, analysis and conclusion, bibliography. Acknowledgements of professionals who assisted you will go with the bibliography. Also include your daily log at the back of the notebook. Worth 100 points note that this may be improved before the school science fair. Please note that winners have re-submitted multiple times!
February 12thScience fair display due. Must include: Title, Problem, Hypothesis, Procedure, Observations, Graphs of Data, Analysis and Conclusion. Be ready to present to the class as part of the class room competition. The best projects will move on to the school competition. Note This must be perfect – you will not have time to redo it!!
