Wikispaces

Languagearts-nhs.wikispaces.com is the class website. Here you will be able to view homework assignments, view class lessons, view grades, see important documents, submit assignments, view class recordings, email, me and view past assignments and lessons.

To access the website do the following:

1.  Go to www.languagearts-nhs.wikispaces.com

2.  Click on either “Freshman Room” or “Sophomore Room” depending on your class.

3.  Click on the picture of what you want to do.

To submit an assignment online do the following:

1.  If you haven’t already done so, first you will first need to create an account and join the wiki. If you already done this, skip to step “2” below. If you have not done this, read steps a-d below.

a.  At the top right corner of any page on the wiki there is a link that says “join”. Click it.

i.  Enter a username and a password – they can be whatever you want.

ii. Then, enter a valid email address. It can be your school email, or Hotmail, or yahoo, or gmail….whatever.

iii.  Lastly, make sure you have the NO circle clicked in the section where it asks if you would like to create a wiki.

b.  You’ll be taken back to the wiki. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the link that says “Join this wiki”

c.  In the comment box, write your name and then click request membership.

d.  You’re done. As soon as I okay the membership, you’ll be able to submit assignments.

2.  Click on either “Freshman Room” or “Sophomore Room” depending on your class.

3.  Click on Attach/Submit

4.  Find the folder for your class period and click on it

5.  Find the link for the assignment you are trying to submit and click on it

6.  Click "Edit this page" near the top right corner of this white space.

7.  Click BELOW the most recent upload so that your upload will not interfere with or delete any previous uploads.

8.  Click the button that says "File" at the top of this page.

9.  In the box that pops up, click the button that says "Upload Files". It's on the right side of the box.

10.  When the green progress bar disappears, click on the file and it should appear on the webpage.

11.  Click "save" at the top of the page. You're done!

School Email and Features

Apart from providing you will a stable email account, your school email has several other features including the ability to create, edit, and save Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, Excel Spreadsheets, and OneNote files even if you do not have these programs installed on your computer. Additionally, you have access to a Skydrive which is an online folder where you can store anything you want, and, because it’s on the internet, will be accessible to you EVERYWHERE that you have internet – school, your house, your friend’s house, New York, Japan- anywhere you go that you have access to the internet (via computer, laptop, cell phone, or otherwise), you’ll be able to access your skydrive. Which means no more having to carry around a flash drive.

Here is how you access your email account:

1.  Go to www.outlook.com

2.  Enter your SCHOOL EMAIL ADDRESS- it’s usually the first 6 letters of your last name followed by your first initial followed by @live.siouxcityschools.com. For example, Sarah Johnson would be .

3.  Then enter your SCHOOL PASSWORD and click “sign in” or hit “enter” on the keyboard.

To Start a NEW Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or OneNote Document do the following:

1.  At the top of the home screen in your email click “Office”.

2.  In the dropdown menu click “New Word Document”, “New Excel Workbook”, “New PowerPoint Presentation”, or “New OneNote Notebook” depending on the type of document you want to create. Clicking any of those will take you to your Skydrive.

3.  On the right side of the screen under “Create a New Online Document” click on the type of document you want to create.

4.  Enter a name and click “save”

5.  You can now create and edit your document. When done, IN THE ONLINE DOCUMENT click “file” and then “save”. The document is now available to you whenever on your skydrive.

To access your skydrive, do the following:

1.  From your email homepage, at the top of the screen click on “more”

2.  From the dropdown menu, choose “Skydrive”.

To share a document on your skydrive with your classmates (good for group projects).

1.  Go to your skydrive and open the file.

2.  Click on the “Share” button IN THE ONLINE DOCUMENT at the top

3.  Move the bar to the level of security you want the document to have. If you do “some friends” you’ll be able to enter the email addresses for those people you want to share it with in the space provided below the bar.

4.  To the right of the sliding bar will be a drop down menu. If you click “Can view”, the people you choose will only be able to see the document. If you click “can edit” they will also be able to edit the document and make changes. The document will now show up in their skydrive.

To share a folder on your skydrive with your classmates (good for group projects).

1.  Open the folder in your skydrive

2.  On the right side of your screen you will see the word “Sharing” in black. Under it you will see “Edit Permissions” in blue. Click “Edit Permissions”

3.  Move the bar to the level of security you want the document to have. If you do “some friends” you’ll be able to enter the email addresses for those people you want to share it with in the space provided below the bar.

To get a link with which you can share a folder or document with someone, click “get a link” or “send a link” on the right side of the screen under “sharing”

To save a skydrive doc to your computer

1.  If you have Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or OneNote installed on your computer, you can save these file types from your skydrive to your computer, or vise versa.

2.  Click on the file in your skydrive.

3.  Near the top of the screen click “Open in…(program name)”

4.  You will be asked to enter your username and password. This is your school username and password.

5.  Once the document is open in the program, choose “SAVE AS” from the “file” menu to save the file to your desired location on your computer.

To Open a Skydrive document on your computer, edit it, and save back to the skydrive do the following:

1.  If you have the 2010 version of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or OneNote installed on your computer, you can save these file types from your skydrive to your computer, or vise versa (this may also work with word 2007, though the navigation may be a little different).

2.  Click on the file in your skydrive.

3.  Near the top of the screen click “Open in (insert program here)”

4.  You will be asked to enter your username and password. This is your school username and password.

5.  When done editing. Click “File” in the top left corner of the program, and then click “save and send”

6.  Choose “save to web” and then to the right click “sign in”

7.  You will need to sign in using your school username and password.

8.  Navigate to the folder where you want to save the file on your skydrive and save it.

To save a doc on your computer to the skydrive

1.  In your skydrive, near the top, click add files.

2.  Select the folder to which you wish to add the file. Folders others have shared with you will also be available.

3.  Follow the remaining directions on screen.
