School Wellness Policy Coordinator

We are currently recruiting for a full-time, limited duration position (scheduled to end June 30, 2015) with the Child Nutrition Program at the Oregon Department of Education.

The Child Nutrition Programs section supports the mission of the State Board of Education by providing leadership to child nutrition programs throughout the state, assisting programs to provide nutritious meals to children and qualifying adults, making children ready to learn, and by supporting nutrition education for children enabling them to reach their full potential for lifelong learning, health and productivity.

The School Wellness Policy Coordinator evaluates and recommends program priorities on school wellness initiatives to achieve state program goals and works in collaboration with colleagues and partners. This position formulates statewide policy procedures and priorities consistent with the mission and policies of the Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority. The School Wellness Policy Coordinator develops model policies to address nutrition and physical activity for students and staff. This position provides strategic coordination and assistance to local education agencies, local governments, early child care and education and pre-k-12 schools in the development and implementation of school wellness policies to promote nutrition and physical activity.

The successful candidate will at a minimum have:

A Bachelor's Degree in Business or Public Administration, Behavioral or Social Sciences, Finance, Political Science or any degree demonstrating the capacity for the knowledge and skills; AND four years professional-level evaluative, analytical and planning work.

OR

Any combination of experience and education equivalent to seven years of experience in nutrition, physical activity, and/or school wellness.

REQUESTED SKILLS

  • Strong comprehensive writing skills.
  • Experience working with schools, school districts and local public health.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal programs.
  • Experience in oral presentations.
  • Working knowledge of presentation software.
  • Knowledge of Oregon’s state laws related to physical education, physical activity and nutrition.
  • Strong knowledge of nutrition, physical activity and school wellness policies.
  • An understanding of culturally responsive pedagogy, closing achievement and opportunity gaps for students of color, curriculum development for diverse populations of students, and multicultural education.
