Eligibility for Support

A new computer can be requested and will be supported by the

School of Medicine Equipment fund if eligibility criteria are met.

A new computer can only be accessed once every 4 years.

Staff seeking a computer for individual use can choose a desktop or laptop computer. The provision of a laptop must be justified against the need to work across multiple sites.

A base model desktop or laptop computer or equivalent funds will be provided. Any additional cost for a more expensive computer (faster processor, extra RAM, larger hard drive etc.) must come from other sources.

Docking stations, keyboards, mouse and other laptop computer accessories will not be supplied. Funding for accessories/extras must be from other sources.

Eligibility for a university funded computer:

  • University funded academic and professional staff employed from university operating funds.
  • Grant funded post-doctoral scientists employed and funded via NHMRC funds or similar, where the conditions of the grant prohibit grant funds being used for computer purchases.
  • Hospital employed scientists engaged in fulltime research within the School of Medicine, functioning as University Academic staff, andwho have no other mechanism to access a computer for research work.
  • University research laboratories can be supported for a desktop computer to provide computing access for communal use by research assistants and students working in a research environment.
  • Specialist use computers for staff supporting research across the School of Medicine who are unable to raise fee for service charges for their time and facilities will be provided with a higher end desktop computer, but only if higher specifications can be justified against the work performed.

Requests for staff where other funds are expected to support computer purchases will not be supported. These include but are not limited to:

  • Research assistants (are expected to use laboratory computers).
  • PhD students (are expected to use research student maintenance funds).
  • Clinical academic title holders (have access to a Health Service computer and/or a Health Service professional development allowance).
  • Staff employed on grants (e.g. commercial or contract research) where the grant budget can be accessedtopurchase computersfor staff employed via the grant.
