Course Description

This course will cover solving systems of linear equations, linear inequalities, systems of linear inequalities, absolute value equations and inequalities, proportions, rational equations, variation problems, radicals, complex numbers and graphs of quadratic functions. We will cover the following sections from the book: 2.8, 3.7, 4.1-4.3, 4.5-4.6, 7.8, 8.6-8.8, 9.1-9.6, 9.8-9.9, 10.1-10.2, 10.4-10.5.

Supply requirements

MyMathLab (MML) code – ISBN 9780321880116, textbook, notebook with paper, graph paper, pencils, ruler, and erasers. No calculators.

Prerequisites

You should have a passing score on the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) examination.

Tests

There will be four 30-minute homework quizzes every Tuesday (from 6/24 to 7/15) as well as the Final Exam. The best three quizzes will count towards your grade. There are NO make-up quizzes.

The final exam will be held on Wednesday, 7/23. The exam is comprehensive. There are not make-ups of the final exam. So if you do not show up for the final exam, you will be given a “NC”. In order to pass this class you will have to get a minimal grade on this exam, which will be determined by the Mathematics Department.

For all tests you will be required to have picture identification in order to take the test.

Assignments

Homework will be assigned for each section covered in class and will be completed mostly online on MML. It is your responsibility to complete each assignment. Quiz and final exam questions will be very much similar to the homework problems assigned.

Grading Policy

Course grade will be based on your 3 best quizzes and final exam,

Quizzes: 60 points

Final Exam: 150 points

You need to get at least a total of 140 points in order to pass the class.

For this class, all assignments are to be completed by the individual student unless otherwise specified. Students are encouraged and allowed to discuss material related to assignments, but writing down the assigned work must be done individually.

Students are responsible for all material covered in class, and also for all announcements made therein.

All devices capable of electronic communication should be turned off during class. Such devices must not be visible during an exam.

No food is allowed in the classroom. You may have a drink if it has a sealed lid on it.
