Course Description:

D NLM/PRM/TDM 403Pre-Internship Workshop.(1)
fall, spring, summer
Introduces and prepares professional status students for the Senior Internship. Includes both workshop and online delivery. Cross-listed as NLM/403/PRM 403/TDM 403. Credit is allowed for only one of the following: NLM 403 or PRM 403 or TDM 403. Prerequisite: NLM or PRM or TDM professional status.

Course Objectives:

Provide the students the opportunity to:

Ø  Understand and develop skills and systems for internship/job searches.

Ø  Identify personal needs, wants and goals.

Ø  Develop professional marketing tools, e.g. resume, cover letters, personal appearance, interviewing skills

Ø  Network with peers and professionals.

Ø  Discuss and consider expectations of the future internship experience and career path.

Ø  Have managed approach towards securing an internship through a series of logical steps

Ø  Review requirements of the internship course.

The Pre Internship Workshop’s myASU site is designed to be a tool for students and will contain important class information, including: course syllabus, assignments and various class announcements. All communication to students will be either posted or emailed through the myASU environment that utilizes the student’s ASU email account. Students are responsible for all information posted on or emailed through this site. Students enrolled in this course are required to have an active ASURITE and ASU email account. If you are going to be using a non-ASU e-mail address please arrange to have your ASURITE account forwarded as necessary.

Course Delivery and Assignments:

The Pre Internship Workshop is delivered predominately via online through the myASU Blackboard site and not as a weekly face-to-face class as is listed in the course schedule. The online course content will consist of online assignments and discussions throughout the semester and hosted on the myASU Blackboard system. Modules (groups of assignments) will be released throughout the semester and will not be accepted late. This course is not intended to be an individual study and a detailed description of the modules and calendar of due dates will be provided at the MANDATORY Pre Internship Workshop Orientation *.

The course will also include requirements that will need to be completed in a face-to-face environment. These requirements have been designed to accommodate your individual schedules.

The face-to-face requirements include:

1.  * MANDATORY: Attendance at one of the scheduled group Pre Internship Workshop Orientations on the Tempe campus during my Tempe office hours or an individual orientation with me in my office in the University Center before January 31, 2007. If you have not completed an orientation by January 31, 2007, you will risk failing this course. The group orientations are scheduled for:

a.  Monday January 22nd 3:40-4:30 in AG 350 or

b.  Monday January 29th, 3:40-4:30 in AG 350

2.  Attendance/participation in at least 2 campus or community-based career/networking workshops or events. Options will be provided throughout the semester and students will be able to choose to attend those that fit into their varied schedules. I highly encourage each of you to participate in at least one career/job fair and complete at least informational interview with a professional from your area of career interest.

3.  Students who are planning on a Summer 07 or a Fall 07 internship must attend a group Senior Internship Orientation or schedule a second individual appointment with me between April 23, 2007 and May 10, 2007.

Grades

This course is graded on a Pass/Fail system. Students must pass this course to fulfill this graduation requirement. To pass this course, students must receive at least a 70 out of the 100 points possible in the course. A grade of Y will be given to students who successfully achieve at least a 70% in the course. Those who do not meet the requirements will receive the grade of E and will need to repeat the course.
