Civics & Economics 2014 -15 Semester Assignments

Dear Parent/Guardian:

In consideration of your child enrolled in the C&E class that currently has a teacher vacancy, we are providing students every opportunity to succeed. We have created this Wikipage for you and your child to access C&E resources and assignments.

Students will be able to make-up assignments and improve grades without penalty for classwork assigned prior to 2/25/15. However, going forward students will be required to turn in assignments at the end of each class period to be graded.

Work turned in late will have 10 points deducted for each day the work is late with a minimum of 50 points earned for late work submitted 5 days and beyond the turn-in date. Students who are absent have 5 days to get missed work and submit assignment. Assignments can also be accessed on this Wikipage.

To prepare students for college and careers; high quality student work submitted in a timely manner is our expectation.

Explain how the tensions over power and authority led America’s founding fathers to develop a constitutional democracy

Assignment 5: Originally Assigned 2/9/15

Foldable: Students will create a foldable highlighting influences of American government. Within each tab, students will explain the document/event, explain how it has impacted the drafting of other documents/events, how it impacts the American government and your life today. Include a visual or symbol that represents each document/event.

Terms to include in foldable: Enlightenment, Magna Carta, Parliament, Common Law (precedent), Natural Rights, Glorious Revolution, Mayflower Compact, Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, Maryland Toleration Act, John Peter Zenger Case, Virginia House of Burgesses, Social Contract, English Bill of Rights

Writing Sample: After students have completed the foldable, they will utilize the information to explain the following question: Explain how the Enlightenment and other contributing theories impacted the founding of our American Democracy. Choose 3 contributions from the foldable and provide real world examples to support and justify your reasoning.

Chart: Students will utilize pg. 39-49 to continue examining reasons why Englishmen came to the Americas and they will create a chart listing the characteristics of the colonies including way of life, economic differences, and key concepts and terms that are associated with each region.

o  Example:

New England Colonies / Middle Colonies / Southern Colonies

Writing Sample: After completing the chart, students will need to write a paragraph explaining how the differences affected the citizens’ of each region. Explain if you could choose a region of the colonies to live in, which region would you choose and why? Clearly explain your reasons.
