Class attitude
5th / Class 1,
26 students / Yes / 1 time per week / T1; HRT takes care of classroom order/discipline and translates when the students struggle. / I lead all activities and the HRT usually jumps in to support when needed. I have to be very genki to get the students excited for the activities. / Motivated and enjoy English. A couple class clowns to look out for.
Class 2,
25 students / Yes / 1 time per week / Same as class 5-1, but HRT is less involved. / I lead all of class. The HRT only participates when I make a direct request. / Half enjoy English, half are ambivalent. Students don’t get too excited about class.
6th / Class 1,
30 students / Yes / 1 time per week / T2; HRT is always T1. / I support the HRT with whatever she requests. I help explain things when they are not clear by using simpler English, gestures, and demonstrations with the HRT. I lead the greetings at the beginning/end of class and give reactions. I act as a model for the students. / Quiet. Most seem to understand, but are too shy to speak in front of class. Teenager-y.
Class 2,
29 students / No / 1 time per week / HRT and I both take turns being T1/T2. HRT very hands-on, roles are fluid. / The HRT and I take turns leading activities in class. I support the HRT when they are T1. English only in this class. Sometimes I have to help with discipline. / Usually very genki, sometimes get out of control (esp. with some games).
Do you meet with HRTs to lesson plan? When? / How is the curriculum decided? / Are you expected to be involved outside of class? How? / Any special projects? / Other information
I meet with one 5th grade teacher and one 6th grade teacher each week (they pass the info along to the other grade teacher). Usually I stop by Monday after work (around 4:30PM). I prepare some activity ideas beforehand and sometimes the HRT does, too. / We follow the Hi, Friends textbooks (1 for 5th grade and 2 for 6th grade), so that basically determines the overarching curriculum. However, I make the lesson plans with the HRTs, and we decide what parts of the textbook to do, what to skip, and brainstorm activities when those in the textbook are not suitable. / I eat lunch with the students every day. I also help clean the school (I sweep around the teacher’s entrance to the school). Sometimes the school requests that I read an English picture book to the 1st or 2nd grade class (usually once a month in the morning). / Every Wednesday at the start of the teachers’ meeting, I practice classroom English with all the teachers.
I only teach 5th and 6th grade, but I eat lunch with all grades.
The school’s band is famous.
