School Matters: Every Child Matters & Multi-Agency Working

0001 10:00:13:08 10:00:17:23

You can't deliver the services

a modern school needs to deliver

0002 10:00:17:23 10:00:20:11

purely with teachers.

0003 10:00:20:11 10:00:22:11

A school, clearly, is not an island.

0004 10:00:22:11 10:00:24:09

It's centred in a community.

0005 10:00:24:09 10:00:26:18

There's a whole range

of people and agencies

0006 10:00:26:18 10:00:29:12

that make a huge difference

to the lives of young people.

0007 10:00:29:12 10:00:33:03

The last time we counted, there

were 67 different multi-agencies

0008 10:00:33:03 10:00:36:17

and different groups that came

into school to support the school.

0009 10:00:36:17 10:00:39:08

The five outcomes in Every Child

Matters cannot be achieved

0010 10:00:39:08 10:00:41:24

by any single agency -

it never will be -

0011 10:00:41:24 10:00:44:08

but we've all got

our part to play in this jigsaw.

0012 10:00:45:05 10:00:48:06

(narrator) As the Every Child

Matters agenda begins to bed in,

0013 10:00:48:06 10:00:52:01

schools and all

the other agencies involved

0014 10:00:52:01 10:00:57:01

are having to get used to working

closer and closer together.

0015 10:00:57:01 10:01:01:18

There are practical things we can do

such as better information-sharing,

0016 10:01:01:18 10:01:06:19

a common assessment framework,

which has been introduced,

0017 10:01:06:19 10:01:10:13

central points where young people

can have... access services -

0018 10:01:10:13 10:01:12:23

for example, in schools -

on a multi-agency basis

0019 10:01:12:23 10:01:15:01

which are informal.

0020 10:01:15:01 10:01:19:06

(narrator) This programme shows

some examples of successes...

0021 10:01:19:06 10:01:22:02

She's been helping me every week -

0022 10:01:22:02 10:01:24:20

helping me with my feelings

and things like that.

0023 10:01:24:20 10:01:26:22

She cares a lot about me.

0024 10:01:26:22 10:01:30:23

(narrator) ..and highlights

challenges still to be overcome.

0025 10:01:30:23 10:01:34:02

Barriers can be financial

and resources, for example,

0026 10:01:34:02 10:01:37:21

or not having trained personnel to

be able to deliver what you want to,

0027 10:01:37:21 10:01:41:12

or even the time to deliver it

because it's pressurised -

0028 10:01:41:12 10:01:43:19

even in an extended school day,

0029 10:01:43:19 10:01:46:13

it's quite pressurised

for children and young people,

0030 10:01:46:13 10:01:48:10

and there's only so much you can do.

0031 10:01:48:10 10:01:50:19

(narrator) The impetus

behind the ECM agenda

0032 10:01:50:19 10:01:53:08

has seen schools

and the other agencies involved

0033 10:01:53:08 10:01:58:01

both extending existing services

and developing new ones.

0034 10:01:58:01 10:02:00:17

Approaches range from

tried and trusted techniques

0035 10:02:00:17 10:02:02:19

like truancy sweeps...

0036 10:02:02:19 10:02:05:13

- Why are you out of school?

- I don't really know.

0037 10:02:05:13 10:02:09:04

I got up late and I was meant to go

to the doctor's, but then I didn't.

0038 10:02:09:04 10:02:11:08

(narrator)

..to individual intervention

0039 10:02:11:08 10:02:15:13

on a level which previously

would have seemed extraordinary.

0040 10:02:15:13 10:02:18:20

I think you started actually looking

at your behaviour and yourself

0041 10:02:18:20 10:02:21:18

even earlier

than when you got to Utah.

0042 10:02:21:18 10:02:23:12

(narrator) Police officer Andy Beges

0043 10:02:23:12 10:02:26:12

and educational social worker

Damian Stormont

0044 10:02:26:12 10:02:28:22

run regular truancy sweeps.

0045 10:02:30:03 10:02:34:00

(Damian) If you sort of pull up

where McDonald's is.

0046 10:02:34:00 10:02:36:21

(narrator) They've spotted

a year 6 pupil.

0047 10:02:36:21 10:02:39:02

- (Damian) You the grandparents?

- (woman) Yeah.

0048 10:02:39:02 10:02:43:04

All we're doing is making sure that

people aren't abusing the system.

0049 10:02:43:04 10:02:46:22

(narrator) The grandparents say

the child's absence is authorised,

0050 10:02:46:22 10:02:49:09

but Andy and Damian

want to be certain.

0051 10:02:49:09 10:02:52:21

Social worker Damian rings

the school to check the story.

0052 10:02:52:21 10:02:56:20

(Damian) Have your year 6 pupils

been given the day off?

0053 10:02:56:20 10:02:59:03

They should actually

be in school, then?

0054 10:02:59:03 10:03:02:13

School have had a message from Mum

today to say he's got a tummy bug.

0055 10:03:02:13 10:03:04:15

(woman) Oh, the little bitch!

0056 10:03:04:15 10:03:08:23

(Andy) Child safety is paramount

as far as everybody is concerned.

0057 10:03:08:23 10:03:10:18

If the child is not in school,

0058 10:03:10:18 10:03:14:23

then what are they doing?

Where are they? Who are they with?

0059 10:03:14:23 10:03:17:10

From the police point of view,

we need to know that,

0060 10:03:17:10 10:03:22:04

and for the child's own safety,

either take them home or to school.

0061 10:03:22:04 10:03:24:15

(narrator) Truancy sweeps

are a classic model

0062 10:03:24:15 10:03:28:00

of schools and other agencies

working together.

0063 10:03:28:00 10:03:30:10

Were you late getting up

this morning?

0064 10:03:30:10 10:03:33:15

(narrator) But Ethan's story

is an interesting example

0065 10:03:33:15 10:03:36:16

of a new, more personalised,

approach.

0066 10:03:36:16 10:03:42:18

The year 8 pupil has a history

of disruptive behaviour.

0067 10:03:42:18 10:03:45:24

Once upon a time,

he'd simply have been excluded.

0068 10:03:45:24 10:03:50:15

But now, people like PC Bob Bowman,

working closely with the school,

0069 10:03:50:15 10:03:54:03

take a much more

sophisticated approach.

0070 10:03:54:03 10:03:57:20

I was even telling my mum that

I was gonna be violent towards you.

0071 10:03:57:20 10:04:01:18

Right. Glad I've heard that now!

0072 10:04:01:18 10:04:05:18

Accessing support and accessing

different outside agencies

0073 10:04:05:18 10:04:07:07

has been made easier,

0074 10:04:07:07 10:04:11:04

and the whole idea of sharing

information and responsibility

0075 10:04:11:04 10:04:13:00

is also made easier for us.

0076 10:04:13:00 10:04:16:13

There's not that kind of cut

on whose responsibility it is -

0077 10:04:16:13 10:04:19:09

we can share it

and decide who's best to act

0078 10:04:19:09 10:04:22:02

on which part of a problem

for a child.

0079 10:04:22:02 10:04:25:18

(narrator) The action

in Ethan's case was unusual:

0080 10:04:25:18 10:04:28:15

Bob Bowman persuaded

the school and Ethan's mother

0081 10:04:28:15 10:04:32:16

that a spell in

a wilderness therapy camp in America

0082 10:04:32:16 10:04:34:21

could help Ethan get back on track.

0083 10:04:34:21 10:04:38:09

He's just returned to school,

after nine weeks in Utah.

0084 10:04:38:09 10:04:40:18

No, what I'm trying

to find out is...

0085 10:04:40:18 10:04:44:21

I was... I was quite concerned

0086 10:04:44:21 10:04:50:02

that because there were about

three weeks or so before you went,

0087 10:04:50:02 10:04:53:05

that you knew where you were going,

0088 10:04:53:05 10:04:54:07

erm...

0089 10:04:54:07 10:04:57:01

I thought you might flip a bit

and not want to go.

0090 10:04:57:01 10:05:01:07

Well, that's what I was originally,

you know, like, doing -

0091 10:05:01:07 10:05:05:06

I was refusing, shutting it out,

just so I wouldn't go.

0092 10:05:05:06 10:05:10:05

OK. So what made the difference

for you to start feeling a bit more:

0093 10:05:10:05 10:05:12:21

"Yeah, I need to do this"?

0094 10:05:12:21 10:05:16:09

It was a number of things.

It was just me, like, er...

0095 10:05:16:09 10:05:18:16

I just recognised

that I had to change.

0096 10:05:18:16 10:05:21:18

(Jean) Ethan is the first person

we've ever actually sent

0097 10:05:21:18 10:05:24:12

on a long residential

to another country.

0098 10:05:24:12 10:05:27:10

Ethan is an unusual character

0099 10:05:27:10 10:05:30:03

who really wasn't making progress

as we wanted -

0100 10:05:30:03 10:05:32:18

either socially or academically.

0101 10:05:32:18 10:05:37:12

Bob was very fired up about Utah

and the wilderness therapy camp.

0102 10:05:37:12 10:05:40:23

Steph Bowman, Bob's wife,

is a teaching assistant here,

0103 10:05:40:23 10:05:44:00

and they both

accompanied him to Utah.

0104 10:05:44:00 10:05:46:22

They had the difficult job

of seeing him off -

0105 10:05:46:22 10:05:49:08

into what was at that point

of the year a blizzard.

0106 10:05:49:08 10:05:53:14

- How was it the first few days?

- It was terrible.

0107 10:05:53:14 10:05:57:00

I can remember when I dropped

you off it was freezing.

0108 10:05:57:00 10:06:01:02

When we went back to our hotel

that night it was cold,

0109 10:06:01:02 10:06:02:22

and I was just thinking:

0110 10:06:02:22 10:06:05:20

"Flipping heck! You're gonna

really know you're here."

0111 10:06:05:20 10:06:09:17

I turned to Mrs Bowman and I says,

"Ethan will hate us for doing this."

0112 10:06:09:17 10:06:11:24

- No, I don't hate you.

- No, no.

0113 10:06:11:24 10:06:15:16

There has been a change

since he's come back from Utah.

0114 10:06:15:16 10:06:18:02

He seems

a lot more positive now in PE.

0115 10:06:18:02 10:06:21:04

Before he went,

very reluctant to get changed,

0116 10:06:21:04 10:06:23:06

sometimes refused

to take part in lessons.

0117 10:06:23:06 10:06:27:04

Since he's come back, obviously

his body shape has changed,

0118 10:06:27:04 10:06:30:09

he feels a lot more confident,

he's taking part in lessons,

0119 10:06:30:09 10:06:32:07

and he just seems more focused.

0120 10:06:32:07 10:06:34:16

Utah was amazing.

It helped me a lot -

0121 10:06:34:16 10:06:39:02

you know, just helped my anger

and my control and my emotions,

0122 10:06:39:02 10:06:41:23

and I'm much more happy

expressing myself now.

0123 10:06:41:23 10:06:44:24

It's just a safe environment

where you can express yourself.

0124 10:06:44:24 10:06:47:23

I think I've got much more control

and confidence.

0125 10:06:47:23 10:06:50:09

The confidence

will come into learning

0126 10:06:50:09 10:06:52:07

and speaking in class and stuff.

0127 10:06:52:07 10:06:54:02

It's made a big difference.

0128 10:06:54:02 10:06:57:16

I don't know if I would probably be

in Roundhay if it wasn't for Bob.

0129 10:06:57:16 10:07:00:06

Sometimes teachers can

feel a bit beleaguered -

0130 10:07:00:06 10:07:02:16

they're trying to work

with young people,

0131 10:07:02:16 10:07:07:20

and some of them need far more

support than they can give them.

0132 10:07:07:20 10:07:11:12

And so there are other agencies

that can really help with that.

0133 10:07:11:12 10:07:13:22

It can make their job easier,

0134 10:07:13:22 10:07:17:17

and it can ensure a young person

progresses in a much better way.

0135 10:07:20:11 10:07:24:08

(narrator) 65 miles away

from RoundhaySchool in Leeds,

0136 10:07:24:08 10:07:28:14

many of the pupils attending

KingswoodCollege of Arts in Hull

0137 10:07:28:14 10:07:30:20

come from deprived estates.

0138 10:07:33:06 10:07:35:15

Social problems

are relatively common,

0139 10:07:35:15 10:07:38:16

and the multi-agency team

serving the school

0140 10:07:38:16 10:07:42:17

work to overcome a wide range

of barriers to learning.

0141 10:07:42:17 10:07:45:24

We deal closely with an extensive

range of multi-agencies,

0142 10:07:45:24 10:07:49:09

ranging from services

within the school,

0143 10:07:49:09 10:07:53:24

to deal directly with students

who are struggling with learning,

0144 10:07:53:24 10:07:56:10

agencies who visit us

on regular occasions,

0145 10:07:56:10 10:07:59:02

and then agencies who we refer

to outside of the building

0146 10:07:59:02 10:08:02:03

who we signpost students to,

and parents.

0147 10:08:03:08 10:08:06:22

(narrator) The child protection

officer, Elaine Wainwright,

0148 10:08:06:22 10:08:11:10

is trying to find the best way

of keeping Kerry, 16, in education,

0149 10:08:11:10 10:08:13:09

despite her pregnancy.

0150 10:08:13:09 10:08:16:09

- (Kerry) There's the arm.

- (Elaine) Yeah.

0151 10:08:16:09 10:08:19:00

(Kerry) There's the head.

0152 10:08:19:00 10:08:22:05

- And there's its body.

- Oh, yeah. Gosh.

0153 10:08:22:05 10:08:24:10

Do you know if

you're having a boy or a girl?

0154 10:08:24:10 10:08:27:13

No, that's next month

when I find out.

0155 10:08:27:13 10:08:29:16

- (Elaine) What are you hoping for?

- A girl.

0156 10:08:29:16 10:08:32:23

So how many weeks are you now?

0157 10:08:32:23 10:08:36:01

- Just over 17.

- 17.

0158 10:08:36:01 10:08:39:19

- Is Kerry going to stay at home?

- Yeah. All through.

0159 10:08:39:19 10:08:42:06

She's doing her courses

at college, and then...

0160 10:08:42:06 10:08:45:16

We've said we'll have the baby, if

she wants, for the first six months,

0161 10:08:45:16 10:08:48:16

- before she goes into a crèche.

- (Elaine) Right.

0162 10:08:48:16 10:08:51:02

- So...

- It's if Kerry can cope.

0163 10:08:51:02 10:08:55:19

- (Elaine) Yeah.

- Because getting up in the night,

0164 10:08:55:19 10:08:59:13

how's it gonna be on her through

the day? Is she gonna be tired?

0165 10:08:59:13 10:09:01:13

(Elaine) That one,

we were talking about.

0166 10:09:01:13 10:09:04:05

These are the consequences,

0167 10:09:04:05 10:09:07:16

and it's now for you to make

as much of it as you can.

0168 10:09:07:16 10:09:09:24

- Yeah.

- Make sure your baby's cared for.

0169 10:09:09:24 10:09:13:02

- Yeah.

- You've got to do that on your own.

0170 10:09:13:02 10:09:16:12

It's gonna be tiring for you,

but it'll be worth it.

0171 10:09:16:12 10:09:20:16

Get some qualifications behind you,

and then hopefully some employment.

0172 10:09:20:16 10:09:21:16

Yep.

0173 10:09:21:16 10:09:23:20

That'll be good

for you and your baby.

0174 10:09:23:20 10:09:27:07

- So what about boyfriend, then?

- Erm...

0175 10:09:27:07 10:09:29:06

- He still in the picture?

- Yeah.

0176 10:09:29:07 10:09:31:20

- Right.

- He's just...

0177 10:09:31:20 10:09:38:07

He said that, erm... like,

when I've had the bairn,

0178 10:09:38:07 10:09:41:11

the first week or so,

he's gonna stay over here...

0179 10:09:41:11 10:09:44:17

- Right.

- ..and help on a night with it.

0180 10:09:44:17 10:09:46:18

That'll be good.

0181 10:09:46:18 10:09:49:17

At the end of the day,

everybody's supporting,

0182 10:09:49:17 10:09:55:02

and a good network's there for you

so you can continue in education,

0183 10:09:55:02 10:09:59:03

so it doesn't come to a halt

just because you're having a baby.

0184 10:09:59:03 10:09:59:24

OK.

0185 10:09:59:24 10:10:03:01

We had to get Mum into school

and do a risk assessment

0186 10:10:03:01 10:10:06:02

to make sure it was safe

for Kerry to be at school,

0187 10:10:06:02 10:10:09:21

any exam consideration

she might need.

0188 10:10:09:21 10:10:16:01

We think she was probably 14 weeks

at the time of the risk assessment.

0189 10:10:16:01 10:10:18:06

(Ray) Elaine's one of

the heroes of the school.

0190 10:10:18:06 10:10:20:11

A long time ago,

she only did attendance,

0191 10:10:20:11 10:10:24:06

but it became such a massive need

and a massive centre for everything.

0192 10:10:24:06 10:10:27:08

She knows the community,

she now knows the businesses.

0193 10:10:27:08 10:10:31:22

She is now involved in more detailed

work, such as child protection.

0194 10:10:31:22 10:10:35:05

But what Elaine can solve

for a family within the building

0195 10:10:35:05 10:10:37:09

helps that family massively.

0196 10:10:37:09 10:10:39:14

There's only so much we can do

0197 10:10:39:14 10:10:42:09

with the children

in the time we have them for.

0198 10:10:42:09 10:10:45:24

If we create positive relationships,

if it's a centre for learning,

0199 10:10:45:24 10:10:49:10

as opposed to a place where some

parents come just to complain at us,

0200 10:10:49:10 10:10:51:23

then we are at the centre

of the whole community.

0201 10:10:51:23 10:10:55:07

If we can engage and work with

adults and work with the parents,

0202 10:10:55:07 10:10:57:05

we will affect the children.

0203 10:10:57:05 10:11:01:06

(narrator) It's the job of extended

learning coordinator Jill Brookes

0204 10:11:01:06 10:11:03:08

to get more parents into Kingswood,

0205 10:11:03:08 10:11:06:10

so she's organised a family fun day.

0206 10:11:06:10 10:11:10:07

(woman)) Well, it's all about

engaging parents in kids' learning.

0207 10:11:10:07 10:11:14:08

It doesn't mean sat behind a desk

and doing their homework,

0208 10:11:14:08 10:11:16:18

it's about having fun experiences.

0209 10:11:16:18 10:11:20:08

It fits into the Every Child Matters

agenda for enjoy and achieve,

0210 10:11:20:08 10:11:24:03

it raises aspirations, it's good

for the economic development -

0211 10:11:24:03 10:11:25:24

because in the long run,

0212 10:11:25:24 10:11:30:00

people coming here have nice,

informal experiences with kids,

0213 10:11:30:00 10:11:32:06

but also they might end up

going on a course.

0214 10:11:32:06 10:11:36:11

They might find out

we're doing a literacy course,

0215 10:11:36:11 10:11:39:14

so they come along with a friend.

And that's as simple as it is.

0216 10:11:39:14 10:11:43:00

We know that paper

and leaflets don't work -

0217 10:11:43:00 10:11:45:08

it's the face-to-face that works.

0218 10:11:45:08 10:11:48:03

So every opportunity we get,

we tend to chat to them,

0219 10:11:48:03 10:11:52:21

but always try and get in through

the back door and promote courses.

0220 10:11:52:21 10:11:56:03

It's about engaging parents

in their children's learning.

0221 10:11:56:03 10:12:01:09

From that, you've got a network

of different ways it can go.

0222 10:12:01:09 10:12:04:23

In the end, it's about them

also achieving their full potential.

0223 10:12:04:23 10:12:08:12

Every child does matter,

and every parent matters as well.

0224 10:12:08:12 10:12:12:02

(narrator) Kingswood offer

computing, literacy and numeracy,

0225 10:12:12:02 10:12:15:13

amongst many other courses,

to all parents.

0226 10:12:15:13 10:12:17:24

"..in keeping with

the season's festivities,

0227 10:12:17:24 10:12:21:07

have decided to hold this year's..."

0228 10:12:21:07 10:12:23:03

There's only one director.

0229 10:12:23:03 10:12:28:02

If we say "he" or she",

we say "has" and not "have".

0230 10:12:28:02 10:12:30:02

- And that's the error.

- Oh, right!

0231 10:12:30:02 10:12:34:12

(narrator) Getting parents

on courses is a visible expression

0232 10:12:34:12 10:12:38:06

of the changes the Every Child

Matters agenda is delivering.

0233 10:12:38:06 10:12:42:08

But the results

are likely to be long term.

0234 10:12:43:04 10:12:47:17

More immediate challenges, like poor

attendance or an incident in school,

0235 10:12:47:17 10:12:50:09

can be a sign

of deeper-seated problems,

0236 10:12:50:09 10:12:53:12

which it's hoped

the ECM multi-agency model

0237 10:12:53:12 10:12:56:24

can now tackle

more effectively than before.

0238 10:12:56:24 10:12:59:11

Some of the issues that we deal with

0239 10:12:59:11 10:13:03:21

begin perhaps by children

who are reluctant attenders,

0240 10:13:03:21 10:13:07:00

then we delve into the background

of that and find other issues.

0241 10:13:07:00 10:13:11:17

Some of the issues might be to do

with an act of theft in school,

0242 10:13:11:17 10:13:15:04

and you research that and uncover

all sorts of other issues.

0243 10:13:15:04 10:13:20:04

Most kids want to attend school -

it's very rare they don't want to.

0244 10:13:20:04 10:13:22:23

Even if... Sometimes it could be

that they've no money -

0245 10:13:22:23 10:13:25:07

no money for bus fares,

no money for dinners.

0246 10:13:25:07 10:13:26:23

It might be that a child

0247 10:13:26:23 10:13:30:10

is not having free dinners

that they're entitled to,

0248 10:13:30:10 10:13:33:18

and you uncover that the family

don't know how to claim

0249 10:13:33:18 10:13:36:00

for things they're entitled to.

0250 10:13:36:00 10:13:40:10

We can put them in touch with

the right people and help them.

0251 10:13:40:10 10:13:42:19

If it is hard for families to manage

0252 10:13:42:19 10:13:45:02

for the children

to come to school regularly,

0253 10:13:45:02 10:13:49:07

we want to help them try, to give

them that chance. We owe it to them.

0254 10:13:50:03 10:13:52:14

(narrator) That was the case

with one family.

0255 10:13:52:14 10:13:54:07

Year 10 pupil, Sarah,

0256 10:13:54:07 10:13:58:01

told the teacher she was

struggling with her lessons.

0257 10:13:58:01 10:14:00:20

The teacher alerted Elaine,

who investigated

0258 10:14:00:20 10:14:05:08

and found that the root cause

was a housing problem.

0259 10:14:05:08 10:14:06:24

(Elaine) She came to me

0260 10:14:06:24 10:14:10:07

because she was finding it difficult

coping in her classes.

0261 10:14:10:07 10:14:12:16

Where she lived, a lad next door

0262 10:14:12:16 10:14:16:06

was causing problems for her,

intimidating her -

0263 10:14:16:06 10:14:18:14

quite low level at first.

0264 10:14:18:14 10:14:23:05

But then things escalated,

and Sarah was not coping in school.

0265 10:14:23:05 10:14:25:11

She was crying a lot,

out of her lessons a lot,

0266 10:14:25:11 10:14:27:09

and just not able to cope.

0267 10:14:27:09 10:14:30:09

So we visited home

to find out what was going on.

0268 10:14:30:09 10:14:35:17

We decided we would do what

they call a common assessment -

0269 10:14:35:17 10:14:39:03

which is a child in need,

0270 10:14:39:03 10:14:41:06

but not a child in danger.

0271 10:14:41:06 10:14:43:12

We felt that the family

were all in need.

0272 10:14:43:12 10:14:48:06

I contacted Housing, as Mum was

after moving, and explained.

0273 10:14:48:06 10:14:52:17

I said, "Sarah has to be paramount

in this. She's a year 10 pupil."

0274 10:14:52:17 10:14:56:02

"She's just letting it all go

because of the pressure."

0275 10:14:56:02 10:15:00:10

He got back to us later that day to

say that a house had been allocated.

0276 10:15:00:10 10:15:04:20

So, on a scale of one to ten,

how much better is it here?

0277 10:15:04:20 10:15:08:22

When we've got it all done,

we'll be ten, won't we?

0278 10:15:10:14 10:15:15:11

- And how do you think Sarah's been?

- She'll still be...

0279 10:15:15:11 10:15:18:23

where she wants

to have her own way all the time

0280 10:15:18:23 10:15:22:08

and not listening to me -

we need to work still on that.

0281 10:15:22:08 10:15:26:16

She helped me all day yesterday,

so I'll give her some credit there.

0282 10:15:26:16 10:15:29:04

So back to school when

you're feeling better, then.

0283 10:15:29:04 10:15:31:05

Yeah.

0284 10:15:31:05 10:15:34:24

The first time I talked to Elaine,

I felt real shocked,

0285 10:15:34:24 10:15:37:22

cos I never met

such a nice person before.

0286 10:15:37:22 10:15:40:10

I felt like she understood

what was going on,

0287 10:15:40:10 10:15:43:01

and that not many people,

0288 10:15:43:01 10:15:46:18

when you're a child

nearly finishing school,

0289 10:15:46:18 10:15:49:18

understand the pressure

you're going through.

0290 10:15:49:18 10:15:52:07

Some people just think

you're making it up,

0291 10:15:52:07 10:15:56:01

but Elaine will just

put everything right for you.

0292 10:15:56:01 10:15:57:24

She's been helping me every week -

0293 10:15:57:24 10:16:02:03

helping me with my feelings

and things like that.

0294 10:16:02:03 10:16:04:18

I had problems with my friends,

0295 10:16:04:18 10:16:08:09

but they seem to have calmed down

since we had them in the room.

0296 10:16:08:09 10:16:11:05

Thanks to Elaine -

she's helped me a lot.

0297 10:16:11:05 10:16:14:13

She cares a lot about me. Ah!

0298 10:16:14:13 10:16:18:08

(Barry) Schools have to work

very closely with other agencies

0299 10:16:18:08 10:16:21:19

to make sure we've got this

holistic support for young people.

0300 10:16:21:19 10:16:25:21

Where there's a recognition

that we all need to play our part,

0301 10:16:25:21 10:16:28:16

then it's much more effective -

0302 10:16:28:16 10:16:31:13

there is greater sharing

of information and trust,

0303 10:16:31:13 10:16:35:17

joint working,

signposting, referrals,

0304 10:16:35:17 10:16:38:18

and understanding

the progression of young people,

0305 10:16:38:18 10:16:43:11

that we're in this together to

ensure they achieve their potential.

0306 10:16:43:11 10:16:46:06

So you have to nurture and foster

those relationships,

0307 10:16:46:06 10:16:49:22

which then help you to work together

more effectively.

0308 10:16:49:22 10:16:54:11

(narrator) In Sarah's case, trust

between student, teacher and agency

0309 10:16:54:11 10:16:56:24

seems to have produced

a positive outcome.

0310 10:16:56:24 10:17:00:17

In SouthHunsleySchool

on the outskirts of Hull,

0311 10:17:00:17 10:17:03:24

a breakfast club is aimed at

providing an informal atmosphere

0312 10:17:03:24 10:17:06:10

where that trust can be fostered,

0313 10:17:06:10 10:17:09:14

enabling students

to share their concerns.

0314 10:17:09:14 10:17:12:21

- How are you since I saw you last?

- Fine, thanks.

0315 10:17:12:21 10:17:15:20

- So what are your plans?

- What I'm planning to do?

0316 10:17:15:20 10:17:18:11

- Mm.

- I'll probably be a chef.

0317 10:17:18:11 10:17:20:14

You should be ideal.

0318 10:17:20:14 10:17:24:14

Our breakfast club is for youngsters

who we identify as at risk,

0319 10:17:24:14 10:17:27:20

who perhaps don't ever

sit down to a meal at home,

0320 10:17:27:20 10:17:30:11

or perhaps do sit down

to a meal at home

0321 10:17:30:11 10:17:33:19

but find school

quite challenging or whatever.

0322 10:17:33:19 10:17:36:06

So we try and identify

youngsters at risk

0323 10:17:36:06 10:17:38:17

who, if we don't do

quite a lot with them,

0324 10:17:38:17 10:17:42:11

could possibly get to the point of

exclusion from main-school setting.

0325 10:17:44:10 10:17:45:22

- Oh!

- Fireworks!

0326 10:17:45:22 10:17:49:01

This is not just about giving them

food - the food is probably

0327 10:17:49:01 10:17:52:00

the least important

bit of this breakfast club.

0328 10:17:52:00 10:17:54:16
