Kim Lane, Ann Nickerson, Susan Elza, Jane Cook, Kathy Evans, Renae Perez.

The meeting was called to order by Dr. Maroba Zoeller at 6:10 p.m. After a welcome and introductions of members, Dr. Zoeller reviewed the Board policies that establish and govern the School Health Advisory Council. Dr. Zoeller reviewed the purpose of the School Health Advisory Council as specified in BDF (Legal) and EHAA (Legal).

Dr. Zoeller introduced Meredith Shapiro and Donna Ballard of Presbyterian Hospital of Allen who demonstrated the Hand Hygiene Program which has been developed by Texas Health Resources. They explained that they have conducted a pilot implementation at Bolin Elementary. With the prevalence of MRSA infection, Dr. Zoeller recommended that the SHAC committee approve the program for district-wide distribution. This would also serve as the first step in a proactive preparation for Pandemic Flu Preparedness.

Members approved the program and Dr. Zoeller stated that she would present the approval in Cabinet and request a place on the next principals’ meeting agenda (October 24th) to present the program and discuss implementation with principals. The suggestion was made that we might utilize our video presentation system (Montage/Safari) for showing the video at secondary schools.

Dr. Zoeller then called upon Erin Needham to present an update of the Fitness Training mandated by S. B. 530. This is a requirement that all students grades 3 – 12 participate in a physical fitness test that will be reported to the state through a computer program called FitnessGram.

Discussion of how testing may be accomplished for that many students and how to organize the testing and reporting was encouraged. Dr. Zoeller reported that more information is offered at a training in Frisco ISD that she has been invited to attend on November 19th. Marissa Rathbone, the coordinator of the fitness testing program at T. E. A. will be the presenter at that meeting and will offer information about the trainer of trainer programs that will be held at the regional service centers.

Dr. Zoeller introduced the topic of required Pandemic Flu Planning and the planned formation of a sub-committee to accomplish that task. The district Pandemic Influenza Planning Checklist was distributed and Dr. Zoeller asked those who were interested in serving on the sub-committee to contact her.

A report of the C.A.T.C.H. curriculum training and implementation was presented and Stacie Curd from Chandler Elementary discussed a Family Fitness night that she had organized as a C.A.T.C.H. activity. Several trained C.A.T.C.H. team members reported they were initiating activities involving the curriculum on their campuses. Dr. Zoeller reported that secondary C.A.T.C.H. curriculum training is not yet scheduled, and that plans were to train teams from each of the middle schools as soon as that training schedule is announced.

Dr. Zoeller reminded the committee of their successful development of a School Wellness Policy which was adopted by the Board as FFA (Local). In that policy, March is designated as Nutrition Month. Dorothy Thompson reported that the virtual cafeteria is a popular site and is available to all AISD students and parents.

With no other discussion items, the meeting was adjourned. The next scheduled meeting is Wednesday, January 16th, 2008.
