School Family Days at Carman Elementary

This year, staff and students at CES will be participating in four whole-school, cross curricular, learning days. We call these “School Family Days”. These learning days are an opportunity for students to meet and work alongside students from other grades and classes within the school. Each “School Family” is made up of two or three students from each class. The students work together to solve problems, create art, and have fun while learning.

Each day is carefully planned to explore topics and ideas that are taught in each grade level’s curriculum. For example, last year, our themes were math, environmental science, celebrations, and community building.

These days provide an opportunity for students to explore curricular topics in a fun, alternative way. In addition, staff have noticed an increased sense of community within the school in regard to new student friendships. Staff also enjoy the opportunity to teach and work with all students within the school.

We look forward to planning and participating in this year’s CES family days. Please check the school calendar for the dates.

Principal Message

Thank you so much to all of the families who made it out to our Student Led Conferences last week. They are always such a wonderful opportunity for the students to share their learning! It was great to see so many of you out! A big thank you to all of our parents who contributed to the supper for the teachers Thursday evening.

Next Wednesday Dec. 6th, we will hold our second School Family Day of the year with lessons and activities on winter. Please see the School Family Day section of this newsletter if you haven’t heard what these great learning days are all about!

December brings much excitement at home and school for our students. This month, we will host our grade 4-6 concert, the grade 1-6 students will go skating (need a helmet and skates), and the ACSL will host our ELF store. Many classes will also have special events, foods, and visitors. Please remember to send healthy snacks for the children’s morning and lunch nutrition breaks to give them the energy they need for this busy month of learning and fun ahead!

Please note that children should not be arriving at school prior to 8:30 in the morning, when our supervision begins. Also, please be cognizant of traffic laws while dropping off and picking up your children at school. Working together, we can keep all of our students safe!

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season, with time spent amongst family and friends, and a few treats along the way!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cecile Affleck

Counsellor’s Corner

Some kids seem to be naturally neat and some, like this poet, tend to the messy. For a lot of messy or disorganized kids, part of the problem is they actually don’t have a very good mental picture of what “organized” might look like.

We can help kids be more organized by helping them to have this picture in their minds.

One way to do this (at home or school) is a checklist; both of my own children have before-bedtime checklists in their bedrooms.

Another way to do this is to actually give them a photograph. I worked with one teacher who actually took photos of students’ desks when they were nicely cleaned up, so the students could refer to these when cleaning up their desks.

Election Day

Today was the speech part of Election Day. One of the candidates are Evelyn and Aubboney for Vice President and Treasurer. They promise they will be respectful and use kind words and respect options and decisions of the Principal and Vice Principal. One of the other candidates for Vice Principal and Treasurer are Liam and Ethan. They promise to listen to everyone’s ideas and Ethan promises to be a good counter. The last candidates for Vice President and Treasurer are India and Shaela. They want to make a mini sticks tournament and art show and student of the week. Ok, so now let’s move on to President and Secretary. First is Griffin and Wynelle. They promise to do sock hops and to raise money to fix the 4-6 washrooms. Wynelle promises to write nicely and quickly. Next is Connor and Anthony. They want to make a suggestion box and have an end of the year BBQ, a mini sticks tournament and a lego building club. Second last, we have Spencer and Nathan. They want to help stop bullying and make grade 6 students to help watch for bullying. Last is Keira and Sara. They want to reopen the multipurpose room for grades 5-6 to eat in, have sock hops and mini stick tournaments.
