4.When applying for the Encompassscholarship you are required to submit a letter of recommendation from anEncompasssupervising professor at your home university. The Encompass programme coordinator may help you finding supervisors.
Financial requirements
A single student requires a minimum of ± €12,000 per year (plus a tuition fee of € 1.519,- (for persons under 30 years old) or € 2.035for the first year, and € 10.710 in the second year*)in order to cover his/her living and study expenses. Personal interest and academic motivation

Financial Aid
EncompassTuition Waivers
There are a limited number of tuition waivers available for students that have a good academic record. This tuition waiver consists of a maximum of € 1.519- or € 2.035,- (for persons over 30) for the first year, and € 10.710 for the second year, depending on the applicant’s financial situation. Applicants are required to submit a detailed account of their financial situation in addition to their admission’s form. The applicants are required to report later changes in their financial situation, such as the acceptance of other scholarships, since this may influence the size of the waiver.
Encompass Full Scholarships
The Department of History of LeidenUniversityawards a limited number of full scholarships for Asian students. Such scholarships include tuition, travel expenses, housing and other living expenses consistent with the government’s financial requirements for visa-applicants, to a maximum of € 12.000 a year. The scholarships are intended for students with an excellent academic record lacking adequate financial resources. They should submit to Leidena letter from their Encompasscontact personsupporting the request for a scholarship. Applicants may be requested to apply for funds elsewhere. Applicants are requested to notify their Asian supervisor or contact person and the Department of History of Leiden University before February 1st2007 that they wish to submit an application for a scholarship.
Other financial assistance
1. Dutch Embassy
The Dutch Embassy in your home country may assist you with information about current scholarship programmes available to foreign students. Several exchange and support programmes are coordinated by the NUFFIC through the local embassies. If there is no Dutch Embassy or Consulate in your country or if you have trouble obtaining information from them, you may write to the Encompassprogrammedirector stating your details which will be forwarded to NUFFIC in The Netherlands.
2. HomeUniversity
Some universities provide financial assistance to students who are studying abroad for a limited number of months. For information contact your university student advisor.
3. Job opportunities
Students from The Netherlands or the European Community have the possibility to work part-time or freelance. Apart from extra income it may also provide cheaper health insurance. You are advised to inform your Encompasssupervisor and the Encompassprogramme coordinator about your work plans, before you accept to enterthe Programme.
4. Student loans
For student loans you need to inquire at your local bank for possibilities and requirements.
