***Please review the following information with your students. The scenarios used in the staff review of the Student Handbook can be used in addition to the points below in order to provide a more “activity oriented” presentation of the material. A copy of scenario ideas has been posted on the staff website.***

Thursday, September 4th -B Day (during SAS)

  • Welcome Students! Take time to do some ice breakers and begin building relationships with your SAS students.
  • Emergency evacuation from classroom & holding area outside building
  • Review evacuation procedures, routes, and assembly areas using the maps provided.
  • Make sure you have a current version of your procedures, routes, and assembly areas posted and visible for all students and guests.
  • SAS reminder
  • Please remind students that Supplemental Academic Support (SAS) attendance is required. Please take a few moments with your students to confirm they understand where they are to be during SAS time and remind them to attend.
  • Please note that use of SAS Passes will not begin until 9/16. Until that time, students are to report to their SAS teacher and remain there during SAS.

Starting on 9/16, students will have the option of using SAS passes. Below is an example of the pass for you to review with students

Friday, September 5th - A Day (during SAS)

  • Welcome continued! Continue making connections with your SAS students.
  • Bell schedule
  • Please remind students that all 10 minute passing periods will have a warning bell after 5 minutes. This warning bell is intended to help students self manage their passing time and to make sure they are prepared for their upcoming class.
  • Please post a copy of the Standard A/B Day Schedule in your room (a copy has been placed in your mailbox).
  • Direct students to SWHS web site and explore alternate schedules. This may be especially important for new students so that they have an idea of where they can find their schedule on an assembly day or a half-day, etc. The link to alternate schedules is:
  • Closed/Open campus explanation
  • Shorewood High School is closed campus during instructional time. During lunchtime students are permitted to leave campus provided they conduct themselves in a responsible manner in the community. Students are not to loiter on private property or along streets adjacent to the campus. SAS is instructional time. Students and staff are to remain on campus during this timeframe. Students should be in their classroom, the library, or in the cafeteria/ commons during SAS. Students who violate this policy are subject to discipline under the student discipline code, and may lose their privilege to leave campus during lunch.

  • In order to provide students with valuable academic support, it is important for students to truly understand how to use this time. Please reinforce the following expectations for SAS:
  • Students report to SAS EVERY DAY at the beginning of the period
  • In order for students to access teacher support during SAS, they need a valid SAS Pass which must be issued BY A REQUESTING TEACHER in ADVANCE of SAS.
  • The SAS Pass will serve as documentation that the requesting teacher provided academic support to the student during SAS.

Monday, September 8th - A Day (during SAS)

  • Welcome back from the weekend! Welcome to the first full week of school! Continue with team building and ice breaker activities.
  • Attendance & Tardy policy - Below is the language in the Student Handbook, however, students need to be aware that each classroom teacher has a policy. Please advise your SAS students to refer to their class syllabus and/or clarify that policy with each of the teachers on their schedule.
  • A student will be considered and designated as "Absent" after 10 minutes of class time has elapsed.
  • Upon a student's third tardy to the same class, the student will receive a classroom-based detention to be served with their teacher during a mutually agreed upon time (i.e. break, afterschool, etc). The teacher will also contact parents by email, telephone, or mailed discipline referral form. If a student fails to attend classroom-based detention, teacher will submit an appropriate discipline referral form to the Dean of Students or an Administrator for appropriate follow-up corrective action.
  • A student's grade may be affected by number of tardies, which would begin accruing at the time of the third tardy.
  • Upon a student's fourth tardy to the same class, teacher should submit a discipline referral form to the Dean of Students or an Administrator for appropriate follow-up corrective action.
  • Electronics, cell phones - including your own classroom policy regarding electronics.
  • Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off and kept out of sight during class time.Parents are reminded that in cases of emergency, the main office is the appropriate point of contact to ensure that your child is contacted and assisted in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Cell phones and other electronic devices must not disrupt classroom lessons with tones, beeping, or vibrating.
  • Cell phones and other electronic devices may not be used in any manner that disrupts classroom lessons.
  • Cell phones, cameras, or other devices should not be used to photograph or film others without their consent.

Tuesday, September 9th - B Day (during SAS)

  • Team building, ice breakers, and warm up as you see fit for your SAS students.
  • Dress code
  • Shorewood High School wants students to practice dressing appropriately for a professional work environment. Thus, the following guidelines apply:
  • At no time are bare feet allowed in the building;
  • An adequate coverage of the body is required. At no time shall the midriff or entire back be exposed. No undergarments, including shorts worn underneath pants, shall show at any time.
  • Shirts or tops: The neck/breast line of shirt or top must meet an imaginary line from the top of one armpit to the top of the other armpit.
  • All shorts/skirts/skorts must pass the "fingertip rule": they must be longer than the tip of the student's fingers when the student has arms fully extended at the side of the body with shoulders relaxed.
  • 1st offense: Persons violating the dress code will be offered three choices in order to comply and correct their attire:

1.Change their attire such that it follows the dress code policy;

2. Wear clothing provided by the school; or

3.Call home for a change of clothing.

  • 2nd and subsequent offenses: Progressive discipline imposed by the Dean of Students/Administration.

Wednesday, September 10th - A Day (during SAS)

  • Please refer to pages 32-33 of the Shoreline School District Statement of Responsibilities and Rights for Students
  • The following outlines corrective actions for Plagiarizing/Cheating

1st Offense:

Student is referred to a principal/designee, student’s

performance on the assignment (or other academic

activity) shall receive a zero. Parents shall be notified

by the administrator.

2nd Offense:

Student is long-term suspended from the class, not to

exceed ninety days. Student is suspended from the

class for the remainder of the semester. (Note: This

may be the same or a different class from the first

offense.) Administrators shall use the established

suspension process with the due process notification.

3rd Offense:

Student is long-term suspended from all classes, not

to exceed ninety days. Student is suspended from all

classes for the remainder of the semester. Parents

shall be contacted and due process rights shall be

given.

  • Student ID Cards:
  • Please remind students to carry their i.d. with them at all times.
  • This identification is primarily used for checking out books in the library and for entry into student dances. It may also be used for identification at school and other functions. When validated, the ID card becomes your ASB card. Photo ID is required for admittance to school events.

Thursday, September 11th- B Day (during SAS)

  • Meals can be consumed in the following areas during meal times; Commons, Courtyard, and Student Store.
  • Meals consumed in other areas of campus will require staff supervision.

In preparation for student use of SAS Passes, please review the SAS expectations so that students are able to transition successfully. It will be especially important to review the SAS Pass. Below is the review information:

  • In order to provide students with valuable academic support, it is important for students to truly understand how to use this time. Please reinforce the following expectations for SAS:
  • Students report to SAS EVERY DAY at the beginning of the period
  • In order for students to access teacher support during SAS, they need a valid SAS Pass which must be issued BY A REQUESTING TEACHER in ADVANCE of SAS.
  • The SAS Pass will serve as documentation that the requesting teacher provided academic support to the student during SAS.
  • Use of iPads for gaming during SAS is not permitted- educational apps only!
