Course Description:
It is in the Mathematics III course that students integrate and apply the mathematics they have learned from their earlier courses. This course includes standards from the conceptual categories of Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.
Academic Goals:
- Number and Quantity:
- Use complex numbers in polynomial identities and equations.
- Algebra:
- Interpret the structure of expressions.
- Write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems.
- Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials.
- Understand the relationship between zeros and factors of polynomials.
- Use polynomial identities to solve problems.
- Rewrite rational expressions.
- Create equations that describe numbers or relationships.
- Understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reason.
- Represent and solve equations and inequalities graphically.
- Functions
- Interpret functions that arise in applications in terms of the context.
- Analyze functions using different representations.
- Build a function that models a relationship between two quantities.
- Build new functions from existing functions.
- Construct and compare linear, quadratic, and exponential models and solve problems.
- Extend the domain of trigonometric functions using the unit circle.
- Model periodic phenomena with trigonometric functions.
- Geometry
- Apply trigonometry to general triangles.
- Translate between the geometric description and the equation and the equation for a conic section.
- Visualize relationships between two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects.
- Apply geometric concepts in modeling situations.
- Statistics and Probability
- Summarize, represent, and interpret data on a single count or measurement variable.
- Understand and evaluate random processes underlying statistical experiments.
- Make inferences and justify conclusions from sample surveys, experiments and observational studies.
- Use probability to evaluate outcomes of decisions.
Supplies:
- 1composition book
- 1 3-ring binder
- 5 dividers
- 2 pencils (mechanical or wooden)
- 1 correction pen (blue, red, purple, pink…. Not black!!!)
- 2 highlighters (different colors)
*These supplies are non-negotiable and need to be purchased within the first week of school. *If you are unable to get any or all of these resources, please talk to me individually.
Homework:
Homework assignments will be given on a regular basis for this class. It is expected that all students complete all homework assignments by their due date throughout the year. There will be a letter grade assigned to the homework assignments for each unit.
Why is HW important?
- It improves your thinking and memory.
- It develops positive study skills and habits, which will help you succeed in college.
- It improves your time management skills.
- It demonstrates independence and responsibility.
- It extends learning through review and practice.
- It connects your school and home life.
Grading:
You will be graded according to a rubric against each standard for this class. Each standard will be assessed individually and input as so. Re-takes are available, but not encouraged, because in college, there are NO RETAKES. However, you will be allowed to retest on every standard one time, on the midterm and final.
Grading Scale:A = 3.4 – 4.0B = 2.7 – 3.3C = 2.0 – 2.6NP = 0 – 1.9
Tutoring:
Tutoring will be available after school on Tuesdays from 3:30 – 4:30. Do not hesitate to ask for help and make sure to attend tutoring proactively to avoid stress regarding grades at the end of the semester!
Website:
The class Edmodo site will be updated consistently
Classroom Expectations:
1. Be respectful.
2. Be inquisitive.
3. Be an active participant in class and group discussions.
4. Be punctual.
5. Be prepared.
6. Be productive.
Classroom Policies:
- Absences: If you miss class for any reason, it is your responsibility to retrieve any missed work or class notes. Class notes will always be posted on my website. Extra copies of class handouts will be in the filing cabinet next to the exit. All other practices will be online on CPM. If you are absent on the day of an assessment, you will make up that test the day you return to class.
- Late Homework: You will have until week 5 to turn in any HW from the first five weeks of school. You will have until week 10 to submit any work assigned between week 6 and week 10. Etc. The homework will always be available on the CPM website.
- Food/Drink: There is no eating or drinking in class (except for water).
- Cellphones: Your cell phone is to remain in your backpack at all times.
- Cheating: If you are caught cheating, you will receive an automatic zero on the test or assignment. Parents and administration will be notified.
Corrective Actions:
1st offense: Verbal Warning
2nd offense: Intervention (seat change, conference etc.)
3rd offense: 10-minute detention after class, parent contact, and administration contact.
