HEAD START PROGRAM

TITLE: CUSTODIAN

REPORTS TO: TRANSPORTATION/MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR

GENERAL FUNCTIONS: The individual is responsible to clean the Head Start classrooms and other premises, assist with maintenance work during the day and perform other related tasks. Individual must communicate with the Transportation/Maint. Supervisor, custodial staff, teachers and generate a cleaning schedule to keep other abreast for changes that may occur. In order to provide a safe and healthy environment for the children the individual must be alert at all times by checking the school premises to ensure grounds are safe and debris-free of hazardous materials or objects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensures that gates and doors with the premises are secured and reports in writing any unusual observations.
  2. Conducts checks through out the premises to ensure a safe environment for the children and staff.
  3. Maintains supervision of all playground equipment to ensure accident free situations.
  4. Submit monthly reports on a timely manner to the immediate supervisor.
  5. Maintain a custodial schedule and communicate with the teaching staff and other custodial staff for any change that may occur.
  6. Clean classrooms (sweeps, moping, waxing, polishing, vacuuming, fixing items as requested, etc.), offices and bathrooms.
  7. Empties garbage containers on a daily basis, especially in the classrooms and reline them with clean bags.
  8. Performs minor repairs on electrical, plumbing and heating/air conditioning units.
  9. Maintains an inventory of all program equipment/supplies.
  10. Fills out requisitions to order supplies and equipment as needed.
  11. Assists teaching staff in the classroom/bus route during field trips as needed.
  12. Maintains a check-out system for all supplies and equipment.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Possess work experience in housekeeping and have a least one (1) year of experience as a maintenance person including minimal knowledge of appropriate machines and tools.
  3. Must have personal vehicle, be willing to obtain a CDL and provide transportation for children and staff.
  4. Must have good communications and written skills.
  5. Must speak Keres and English.
  6. Must be willing to work with minimal supervision.
  7. Must obtain a physical exam, food handler’s certificate and pass a criminal background check.
