SFCC Spring Semester Fine Woodworking Open House

Santa Fe, NM, Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006 — The Santa Fe Community College Fine Woodworking Program is hosting an open house for the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14. The open house will showcase spring semester classes in furniture making and woodturning.

This semester’s open house will feature classical guitars made by students enrolled in the college’s guitar making class taught by Michael Mocho. The guitars are made with mahogany sides and rosewood fingerboards with each student adding a personal touch in the design of the peg head, carving details or inlay. The guitars will be on display and local musicians and students will play the instruments during the open house.

Instructors and students will be available to discuss and answer questions about the program, which attracts students from around the world. The event will include ongoing demonstrations of fine wood working techniques, finishing and woodturning. Anyone interested in signing up for the program will be able to register for spring semester classes, which begin Jan. 23. Classes are held days, evenings and weekends, and are taught by local woodworking professionals.

The open house will take place in rooms 424, 425 and 426 at Santa Fe Community College located at 6401 Richards Ave. There will be signs at the main entrance of the college directing the public to the fine woodworking studios.

The SFCC Woodworking Program is an occupational program at SFCC offered since 1991. Students who complete the program can seek employment in the custom woodworking field, pursue a career as a self-employed designer or craftsperson or practice woodworking as a serious avocation.
