Santa Ana College Upset in Second Round of Playoffs

SANTA ANA, CA – The Santa Ana College men's soccer team's goal to win its third straight state championship came to an end Tuesday at Santa Ana College when visiting Cerritos College claimed the first victory by an away team all season. Cerritos scored its only goal in the 87th minute to defeat the reigning champions 1-0.

The teams battled throughout the game with few offensive chances on either side of the field. Cerritos out shot the Dons nine to six, however both teams had three shots on goal. Julian Hernandez (Bolsa Grande HS) played the entire goal for SAC making two saves while his counterpart Miguel Lopez also played the entire game and made three saves.

The game was decided in the 87th minute when Cerritos had a throw-in deep in its own zone. Andy Rico headed the ball which took a high bounce after he hit it and fell behind Hernandez who jumped in attempt to stop the ball.

The loss ends the Dons season that finish with a record of 16-4-4 and Cerritos moves on with a 17-3-5 record.
