Guest Speaker : Kathy Tulloch – Facilitator with Love and Logic

  • The saying goes that with parenting, by the time you’re an expert, you’re out of a job.
  • Three founders for the “Love and Logic” program: Foster Klein, Jim Fay, and Charles Fay.
  • What is the philosophy? The belief is that there are four natural consequences with empathy. The consequences do the teaching. Avoiding power struggles with kids. Pillar of relationship and communication are paramount now. Avoid power struggles. Teach responsible behavior by offering children choices allowing them the opportunity to make mistakes now when the risks are lower.
  • According to “Love and Logic”, there are five steps for kids to solve their own problems. Audios in the catalog highlight these areas.
  • Kathy then presented a short four minute audio featuring Jim Fay and the story of Randy. The selection focused on the importance of allowing children the freedom to make mistakes early on and learning to become responsible for their actions.
  • The ”Love and Logic” program provides a lot of resources to teach our kids.
  • If you would like to find out more: Look through the catalogs, check out audio selections at the library or call the free “Love and Logic” advice line.
  • Kathy Tulloch also offers classes and can be contacted for more information.

Principal’s Report:

  • Update on the Will Stalcup’s Eagle Scout Project: Will has contacted the SCES business partners and was able to get all of the money donated. Will would like to get the beds planted sometime this month. His project will be updating the raised beds by the front door.
  • Tim Bushman is also in the process of beginning his Eagle Scout Project. He will be working with Mr. Richards to fix up the courtyard.
  • The Thanksgiving meal was held today. There were over 175 parents signed up to come. This was Mr. Luis’ first Thanksgiving meal at Sanders. Mr. Luis was very proactive and the meal went very smoothly considering the number of people.
  • American Education Week is next week. For more details, please check the school website or emails from the classroom teachers.
  • Sanders has been invited by Newton Lee to join them for a basketball game. The basketball game will be held the first weekend in March at Stone Bridge High School. The players will be Sanders Corner staff vs. Newton Lee staff. Mrs. Hwang and the staff have already started their team line-up. Mrs. Hwang would like to have help from the PTA for a cheering section, etc.
  • Details for how to make donations for the Decker family will be posted on the PTA website and mentioned in a connect-ed message.
  • The superintendent is asking schools to consider what they can do to help people in New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy came through. Shannon Lauterstein mentioned that she works for the Keller Williams Realty office. Keller Willaims has access to a truck which will be making runs up to New Jersey to donate goods. She will find out what items need to be donated and how to donate them.

Boundary Update: Lisa Antonucci

  • The SCES PTA is sharing info on the potential boundary changes so SCES parents are aware of the possibilities of potential changes in attendance zones for the next school year.
  • Two new schools will be opening next year. Therefore, LCPS will be re-drawing the attendance zones. Currently, we have 4 DN zones at SCES.
  • Six plans have been formally put forth. Each of the six plans have been backed by a board member. The total number of plans in consideration totals seven (when the LCPS plan is added in as well).
  • Two of the plans have two of the DN zones moving out of SCES and into Cedar Lane.
  • The next LCPS boundary meeting will be held December 3.
  • The process will end on December 11 when a final vote is taken.
  • The SCES PTA is only disseminating the info but cannot and will not take a stance officially.
