This application form is for mobility support:

  1. Support to candidates on fellowships is for a duration of up to 3 months and may include travel in the region or internationally.
  2. Experts in technical or business fields may be invited by host institutions for up to 4 weeks for specific technical assistance to be provided to organisations in SANBio member states
  3. Knowledge exchange/peer to peer visits for up to 2 weeks duration includes regional and international meetings as well as seminars or training courses with a specific focus in the areas of health and nutrition and on strengthening the visibility of SANBio network partners.
  4. Business development mentorship programmes to support bio-science start-ups for up to two weeks with the aim to support commercialisation of research outputs.

Sections 1 to 5 must be submitted electronically to with the subject line titled: V6LFISA/MFG001. The applicant must submit a signed PDF of the application form together with a Word version (unsigned) containing the same information as the PDF.

6. INSTRUCTIONS

INSTRUCTIONS (NB!!)
  1. All applications must be submitted via email and must be accompanied by supporting documents including a letter of endorsement and budget support from their organisation.
  2. If a visit for fellowship or training at another institution, please provide letter of invite from host institution.
  3. Applicants must also attach their CV with the application, and provide a copy of valid passport for travel arrangement purposes.
  4. Applicants need to ensure that the necessary approvals are obtained within their home institution prior to submission of the request to SANBio/BioFISA II.
  5. SANBio/BioFISA II will only cover the following expenses within acceptable thresholds:
  • Flights– most economical routing, flights for before the event and immediately after the event;
  • Accommodation– reasonable accommodation will be acceptable, maximum thresholds may apply, accommodation for training days only, no extra days may be allowed;
  • Event registration/Course attendance fees– costs not exceeding 50% of the requested grant amount can be paid.
  • Bench fees for candidates on fellowship to not exceed R10 000 per month.
  1. The following costs will not be covered by SANBio/BioFISA II, and will have to be covered by the applicant’s home institution: Per diems/subsistence allowances, incidentals, medical insurance, vaccinations, travel insurance, return travel to airport in applicant’s home city and host city, and visa fees if applicable. A letter of support, signed by the host institution head/supervisor should be provided as part of the application, stating the support provided by the host institution.
  2. Accommodation to be booked for the training days only – no extra days will be paid by SANBio/BioFISA II.
  3. The maximum amount for travel support is ZAR 25,000 for regional travel and ZAR 35,000 for international travel.
  4. Candidates on fellowship will be awarded a grant of R 100,000 to be administered by the home institution.
  5. This form MUST be submitted AT LEAST TWO MONTHS before the event for REGIONAL travel and THREE MONTHS for INTERNATIONAL travel, failure to do so will result in the application not being accepted.
  6. This form and all supporting documents must be completed in ENGLISH.
