Title: Cadet Leadership Selection Process

POLICY:
Cadets will be selected for leadership positions at NVMI on the basis of the character, competence, and presence --- overarching leadership talents as well as academic performance and demonstrated attendance and past performance in cadet leadership roles. The selections will be fair, transparent, and strive to result in selecting both the most qualified applicants and those willing and able to serve in the capacities for which they have been selected.
PROCEDURE:
A. On or about March 1 of each school year, cadets interested in service in one of the primary Regimental staff positions will be asked to apply by completing a Letter of Interest and including a copy of their service record, academic transcript, attendance record for the school year, and demerit printout.
B. Such applications will be due on or about March 20.
C. The applications will undergo a preliminary screening by the Commandant, Senior Enlisted Advisor, and any other key personnel selected by the Commandant. Those who pass the preliminary screening will be invited to an interview. Interviews will be conducted the first two weeks of April.
D. The following positions will be selected by the above panel and tentatively announced to the Military Staff for wider input:
- Commander
- XO
- CSM
- S1
- S2
- S3
- S4
- S5
- S6
E. The entire military staff will have an opportunity to give input to the proposed slate of Regimental staff officers for the next school year. The Commandant will make the final determination and announce the results to the cadets during a closed-door meeting with all applicants. This shall occur prior to 20 April.
F. Applicants who did not make the cut for Regimental staff will be asked if they wish to have their applications considered for battalion or company level positions. If so, the Commandant will repeat the process by 30 April to fill the two battalion staff rosters.
G. Those applications for all who did not get selected for Regimental or Battalion command/staff will be forward to the company level for priority consideration for company level command and staff positions.
H. TAC Officers and TAC NCOs will conduct a similar process by announcing the application process for their companies.
I. Company level positions to be selected prior to the end of the school year are as follows:
- Commander
- XO
- 1SG
- S1
- S2
- S3
- S4
- S5
- Platoon Leaders (3 current 8th through 11th grade students, one current 6th grader, one current 7th grader) (in the case of music company, one PL for MS and one PL for HS will be selected).
- Platoon Sergeants (same as Platoon Leader quantities)
J. Applications for company command and staff positions will be accepted at the company level between May 1st and 15th. The TAC Teams will make selection, using the interview process if they so wish, and will announce their decisions prior to 20 May.
K. A final roster of cadet leaders at the regimental, battalion and company levels will be published NLT 25 May annually.
