Emerald Star Project

What is an Emerald Star? The San Bernardino County Council Awards and Recognition Committee identified the need for alternate leadership opportunities for members. As a result, the 4-H Emerald Star rank (a county rank) was developed to fulfill this need. The objective of the Emerald Star is to encourage those members who have joined 4-H as an older member and does not have time to complete Star ranks so the have the opportunity to achieve a leadership rank. It also is for eligible 4-H members to achieve extra-ordinary levels of leadership and achievement in the 4-H program. What does an Emerald Star applicant do? An Emerald Star applicant must present a plan of proposed leadership which will benefit the County 4-H Program or community. They must complete this plan and submit a self evaluation on their plan 30 days prior to Achievement Night to be recognized. Plans should not exceed 24 months for completion. The qualifications are as follows. Any 4-H member who is, or who will be, in the 8th grade or above at the implementation of the project and who has not previously completed an Emerald Star project or plan may apply. For more information or an application contact the county office.

County All-Stars Invade Fort Irwin

Eight San Bernardino County All-Stars: Russell Champlin, Carrie Crane, Carrie Curley, Michael Grainger, Maloree McElvain, John Trammell, Stephanie Voss, and Stacey Witt, headed to the high desert to visit the Fort Irwin military base 4-H club. This visit marked the first time a group of youth enrolled in a traditional 4-H program ever visited a base or military club.

Our visit began with ice breakers designed by both groups. We had two "tag-a-longs" who made friends with some of the younger kids, exchanging addresses to keep in touch.

The All-Stars presented programs on Food Fiesta, Record Books, Teamwork, Demonstrations and "Beyond Local Events". The Fort Irwin kids exhibited their arts and crafts, which we encouraged them to exhibit at the county fair, and explained how their program is the same from base to base. They treated us to a hamburger and hot dog lunch and then they made pie for our dessert. After they made pie, they gave us their recipe and we made the same dessert. Their pies were great, ours did not firm up as intended.

Fort Irwin is isolated, so they provide the services on the base for their youth. We were very impressed with their facilities, they even have a skate board park. The youth taught us how to play nine-square ball and did a presentation on trust, using a "mine field" of toys.

In the afternoon we were given a base tour that included actually sitting in a Blackhawk Helicopter. We got to try on the flight vest and they even let us use the night vision goggles (they cost $8,000.00 a pair). The people at the base were very hospitable and interested in the traditional program. We really had a great day and Food Fiesta and promised we would come and help them organize. We gave them a copy of our Food Fiesta packet, just think, if they try our idea, and then move to another base, our format could travel clear across the United States.

Thanks to the youth and leaders at Fort Irwin, we had a great day.

Gayle Champlin, All-Star Advisor
