Sample Student Activities to Teach PBS Concepts

ACTIVITY I

"Friendship Necklace" NON-CONTINGENT ATTENTION

(Each girl must have two pockets where beads can be stored).

Designate a beginning and ending time to the activity.

Materials; 20 craft beads per girl for creating a necklace or bracelet; 1

piece of wire or string per girl for stringing beads into a necklace or

bracelet; 1 clasp per girl if short wire/string is used.

1. Explain the concept of non-contingent attention. (Each girl will

practice using a variety of ways to provide attention.)

2. Each girl will draw a name of another girl. This is a secret pal.

Place the name in an empty pocket.

3. Each girl is given 20 beads to be created into a necklace later.

Place the 20 beads in the second empty pocket.

4. Each time the secret pal provides non-contingent attention, a bead is moved

to the name pocket.

5. At the end of a designated time, the beads in the name pocket are

given to the secret pal to create a friendship necklace or bracelet with

the number of beads in the name pocket.

ACTIVITY II

Set a theme for the outing - Example: Tropical

(Let girls collectively create a set of 3-5 positively stated expectations

for the outing).

1. Give each girl an index card.

2. Each girl writes her name in the center of her card.

3. The cards are passed for signatures of all girls on each others cards.

4. The cards are returned to the owner of the cards.
