These scripts can be used to help promote the Plastic Bag Grab challenge during your daily school announcements.

  1. Help SCHOOL NAME win up to $5,000to support our environmental initiatives! We are collecting plastic bags for recycling to keep them from garbage and waterways, and educating our community on the 3Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle! Please bring plastic shopping bags to school from Monday, May 29 – Friday, June 2.

We can also winprizes for engaging our community in the 3Rs and reducing plastics waste. Classes are encouraged to create and share fun photos and videos of collection and community engagement.

  1. Did you know that more than one billion plastic shopping bags are handed out in Canada every year, and they can all be reused or recycled? Let’s make sure all bags in the SCHOOL NAME community are recycled by bringing plastic bags from home to school from May 29 – June 2.

All the bags will be collected and brought to Walmart. They will then be sent to a factory where they will be recycled into small plastic pellets that are used to make different products such as plastic lumber, t-shirts, sweaters, plastic flower pots, and of course - new plastic bags!

  1. Student 1: Did you know that SCHOOL NAME is participating in the Plastic Bag Grab challenge from May 29 – June 2, 2017?

Student 2: No! What is the Plastic Bag Grab challenge?

Student 1: Schools across Canada are challenged to collect as many bags as possible for recycling in one week. The school that collects the most bags per student can win $5,000 for environmental projects! Schools can also win prizes if they help spread the 3Rs in our community!

Student 2:That sounds awesome! But how do weparticipate?

Student 1: It’s easy! Bring plastic bags from your home and community to your classroom from May 29 to June 2 and ECO CLUB OR TEACHER will collect them, count them, and bring them to Walmart for recycling.

Student 2:That’s so cool! It’s really important that we take care of our planet, and that we reduce, reuse, and recycle before we throw anything into the garbage. What kind of bags should we collect?

Student 1: Any kind of plastic shopping bag is accepted in the challenge. Good luck!

Student 2: No STUDENT NAME. What is the Plastic Bag Grab challenge?

Student 2:That’s great! But even though we are collecting plastic bags, shouldn’t we be reducing how many plastic bags we use?

Student 1: Yes!The 3Rsare in their order of importance: reduce, reuse, and recycle.Soit’s best that we reduce and reuse first! That’s why we we’re going to help teach the community about the 3Rs so less bags need to beused in the first place!

Student 2:You’re right, STUDENT NAME. We should make sure everyone knowshow important it is to reduce, reuse bags as many times as possible, and thenrecycle bags. Plastic bags should always be properly managed so they’re not lost to garbage or waterways where it can harm the environment and ecosystems. Where should we go for more information?

Daily tips/fun facts for announcement

  • Plastic bags and film can be recycled into many different products such as plastic lumber, t-shirts, sweaters, plastic flower pots, and of course - plastic bags can be recycled into new plastic bags!
  • A 5 metre (16foot) long plastic deck board has more than 2,000 bags in it.
  • Every year around the world between 500 billion and one trillion plastic bags are used.
  • Refuse plastic bags! Bring your own reusable bag to the store and help your parents remember to bring a bag when they shop.
  • Reuse your plastic bags as many times as possible! There are many ways that you can reuse plastic bags.
  • More than one billion plastic bags are handed out in Canada every year.
