Let’s start at the very beginning. (It’s a very good place to start!)
Note: You only have to do this once
Establishing a Profile
- Make sure you are on-line.
If you are on campus, the computer is probably attached to the server. If you are at home, you will need to dial-up your Internet provider (MichNet, etc.)
- Open Netscape Communicator 4.5. The Profile Manager box will open.
- Click on the Manage Profiles button.
- Click on New….
- Click on Next>.
- Type in your name in Full Name box.
- Hit tab and type in e-mail address. Then click Next>.
- Click Next> again.
- In Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box, type in “kellogg.cc.mi.us”. Then click Next>.
- In the Mail server user name box, type in the first part of your e-mail address, i.e. paffk.
- Tab to Incoming Mail Server box and type in “kellogg.cc.mi.us”. Then click Next> and then Finish.
- You will immediately go to the Netscape home page. You can begin to use Messenger now or can register and customize your home page first if desired.
- Make sure you are on-line.

- Open Netscape Communicator 4.5. The Profile Manager box will open.
- Click on the located to the right of the Profile Name box.
- Select your profile.
- Click on the Start Communicator button. This will load the Netscape home page.
- Click on the Communicator pull-down menu on the taskbar.
- Select Messenger and click.
- Open Messenger.
- To get new messages, do one of the following:
- Click Get Msg on the Messenger window toolbar or
b.Click the Inbox icon under Local Mail on the component bar.
- Enter your password when requested. Any new messages will be displayed in the subject box.
- To read a message, click on the message. The contents will be displayed in the box below the subject display window.
- Double click on the message you wish to open.
- Click the Next toolbar button to open and read all unread messages in order.
- To open an attachment:
- Click the paper clip icon at the top of the message.
- Select the attached file by clicking on it.
- Right click on the mouse to open a pop-up menu.
- Choose open to view the attached file or
- Choose save to save the attached file.
- Select the message you want to save in the Messenger window.
- Open the File menu.
- Choose Save As.
- Enter the name of the file and the drive you want the file saved on.
- Click on Save.
- Click on the message you want to print.
- Click the Print toolbar button.
Composing an email message
To compose a new message:
- Click the New Msg toolbar button.
- Enter the email address of the recipient in the To Line.
- Press Enter.
- Enter the subject in the Subject Line.
- Type the main body of the message in the Composition Area.
- Click the Spelling toolbar to check the spelling.
- Click the Send toolbar button.
To reply to a message:
1.Click the Reply toolbar button while the message is open.
2.Click the Quote button if you want to include the text of the original message in your reply.
- Address your reply to other recipients as needed.
- Enter new text.
- Click the Spelling toolbar button.
- Click the Send toolbar button.
To forward a message:
- Double click the message that you wish to forward.
- Click the Forward toolbar button.
- Insert the email address of the recipients that you want to receive a copy of the message.
To attach a file to a message:
1.Compose a message as described in
2.Click the Attach toolbar button.
- Select File from the menu that drops down.
- Locate the file that you want to attach and click on it.
- Click on the Open button.
- The name of the attached file will show in the address box of the message.
- You can continue to enter text in the message if desired.
- Click Send button when done.
- Select the message you want to delete from the message list.
- Click Delete button
3.Messenger moves the message to the Trash Folder.
To recover messages from the Trash
- Click the Trash Folder.
- Select the message you want to recover.
- Click, hold and drag the message back to the Inbox.
To delete messages permanently:
1.Open the File menu.
2.Choose Empty Trash Folder.
To create a new address book:
- Click on Communicator to open.
- Click on Address Book from the pull-down menu.
- Open the File menu.
- Choose New Address Book.
- Type the name for your new address book.
- Click OK.
To create an address book card for an individual
- Click the Address Book name you want from the Address Book directory.
- Click New Card in the Address Book toolbar.
- Type the information about the individual, in the New Card dialog box.
- Click the Contact tab to enter additional information if desired.
- Click OK.
Using the Address Book To Send Messages
- Click the Address button.
- Choose the Address Book name you want from the Directory.
- Choose the name of person you desire to send mail to.
- Double click on that person’s name.
- Type your message.
To view or edit an individual’s card
- Double-click the name in the address window.
2.Make changes needed.
To create a Personal Mailing List:
- Open the Address Book.
- Click the New List toolbar button.
- Enter a name for the mailing list in the List Name field.
- Enter a short, easy-to-remember nickname by which you’ll address the list in the List Nickname field.
- Type the name of each person that you want to include in the list.
- Be sure to press enter after each name.
- Click OK.
