A Job Aid Using Netscape Communicator 4.5

Let’s start at the very beginning. (It’s a very good place to start!)

Note: You only have to do this once

 Establishing a Profile
  1. Make sure you are on-line.

If you are on campus, the computer is probably attached to the server. If you are at home, you will need to dial-up your Internet provider (MichNet, etc.)

  1. Open Netscape Communicator 4.5. The Profile Manager box will open.
  1. Click on the Manage Profiles button.
  1. Click on New….
  1. Click on Next>.
  1. Type in your name in Full Name box.
  1. Hit tab and type in e-mail address. Then click Next>.
  1. Click Next> again.
  1. In Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box, type in “kellogg.cc.mi.us”. Then click Next>.
  1. In the Mail server user name box, type in the first part of your e-mail address, i.e. paffk.
  1. Tab to Incoming Mail Server box and type in “kellogg.cc.mi.us”. Then click Next> and then Finish.
  1. You will immediately go to the Netscape home page. You can begin to use Messenger now or can register and customize your home page first if desired.
  1. Make sure you are on-line.

  1. Open Netscape Communicator 4.5. The Profile Manager box will open.
  1. Click on the located to the right of the Profile Name box.
  1. Select your profile.
  1. Click on the Start Communicator button. This will load the Netscape home page.
  1. Click on the Communicator pull-down menu on the taskbar.
  1. Select Messenger and click.

  1. Open Messenger.
  1. To get new messages, do one of the following:
  1. Click Get Msg on the Messenger window toolbar or

b.Click the Inbox icon under Local Mail on the component bar.

  1. Enter your password when requested. Any new messages will be displayed in the subject box.
  1. To read a message, click on the message. The contents will be displayed in the box below the subject display window.
  1. Double click on the message you wish to open.
  1. Click the Next toolbar button to open and read all unread messages in order.

  1. To open an attachment:
  1. Click the paper clip icon at the top of the message.
  1. Select the attached file by clicking on it.
  1. Right click on the mouse to open a pop-up menu.
  1. Choose open to view the attached file or
  1. Choose save to save the attached file.
  1. Select the message you want to save in the Messenger window.
  1. Open the File menu.
  1. Choose Save As.
  1. Enter the name of the file and the drive you want the file saved on.
  1. Click on Save.
  1. Click on the message you want to print.
  1. Click the Print toolbar button.

 Composing an email message

To compose a new message:

  1. Click the New Msg toolbar button.
  1. Enter the email address of the recipient in the To Line.

  1. Press Enter.
  1. Enter the subject in the Subject Line.
  1. Type the main body of the message in the Composition Area.
  1. Click the Spelling toolbar to check the spelling.
  1. Click the Send toolbar button.

To reply to a message:

1.Click the Reply toolbar button while the message is open.

2.Click the Quote button if you want to include the text of the original message in your reply.

  1. Address your reply to other recipients as needed.
  1. Enter new text.
  1. Click the Spelling toolbar button.
  1. Click the Send toolbar button.

To forward a message:

  1. Double click the message that you wish to forward.
  1. Click the Forward toolbar button.
  1. Insert the email address of the recipients that you want to receive a copy of the message.

To attach a file to a message:

1.Compose a message as described in

2.Click the Attach toolbar button.

  1. Select File from the menu that drops down.
  1. Locate the file that you want to attach and click on it.
  1. Click on the Open button.
  1. The name of the attached file will show in the address box of the message.
  1. You can continue to enter text in the message if desired.
  1. Click Send button when done.
  1. Select the message you want to delete from the message list.
  1. Click Delete button

3.Messenger moves the message to the Trash Folder.

 To recover messages from the Trash

  1. Click the Trash Folder.
  1. Select the message you want to recover.
  1. Click, hold and drag the message back to the Inbox.

 To delete messages permanently:

1.Open the File menu.

2.Choose Empty Trash Folder.

 To create a new address book:

  1. Click on Communicator to open.
  1. Click on Address Book from the pull-down menu.
  1. Open the File menu.
  1. Choose New Address Book.
  1. Type the name for your new address book.
  1. Click OK.

 To create an address book card for an individual

  1. Click the Address Book name you want from the Address Book directory.
  1. Click New Card in the Address Book toolbar.
  1. Type the information about the individual, in the New Card dialog box.
  1. Click the Contact tab to enter additional information if desired.
  1. Click OK.

 Using the Address Book To Send Messages

  1. Click the Address button.
  1. Choose the Address Book name you want from the Directory.
  1. Choose the name of person you desire to send mail to.
  1. Double click on that person’s name.
  1. Type your message.

 To view or edit an individual’s card

  1. Double-click the name in the address window.

2.Make changes needed.

 To create a Personal Mailing List:

  1. Open the Address Book.
  1. Click the New List toolbar button.
  1. Enter a name for the mailing list in the List Name field.
  1. Enter a short, easy-to-remember nickname by which you’ll address the list in the List Nickname field.
  1. Type the name of each person that you want to include in the list.
  1. Be sure to press enter after each name.
  1. Click OK.
