Salt River Project Science Scholarships

Eligibility

Salt River Project Scholarships ($1900 to $2,000 per semester) support ASU West students in the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences who are enrolled for Individualized Instruction (LSC 499) under the supervision of faculty members of the school. Scholarship applications will be accepted for fall (2016). A student may apply for and receive up to three one-semester Salt River Project Scholarships). Students who receive awards must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be registered for at least 12 credit hours of study, including 3 credit hours of LSC 499, during each semester of the award. Students at any academic rank are encouraged to apply.

Applications

Applications for Academic Year 2016-17 Scholarships must be delivered to the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences office (FAB N-115) by the following deadline:

  • Applications for fall 2016scholarships must be submitted no later than 5 pm on Friday, August 26, 2016.

Applications are limited to 5 pages of single-spaced 12-point type, including literature citations. The application must be written by the student, but faculty members are encouraged to review drafts of the proposal and make comments and suggestions. An application should describe the work proposed, placing it in the context of the biological problem being addressed. If the student has already worked in the faculty member’s lab, the application should review the work that has been completed. A letter of support from the sponsoring faculty member is required, and must include an assessment of the student’s ability to carry out the work and explain how the student’s work will be supervised and reviewed during the period of the scholarship. Applicants should attach the most recent version of their DARS (or similar academic progress report) so that the reviewers can evaluate their academic progress in the sciences.

Evaluation Process and Criteria

Applications will be evaluated by a review committee from the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences and the Environmental Services Department of SRP. Rankings will be based on the overall quality of a student’s proposal and the student’s academic potential. These include the quality of the writing, how well the student has placed the work in an appropriate biological context, the feasibility and appropriateness of the work proposed, the quality of the student’s academic record and the faculty sponsor’s assessment. The number of Salt River Project Scholarships awarded each semester will be based on the number of meritorious applications, not to exceed six (6) in one academic year. Scholarships will be granted only when funds are available. The decision of the committee is final, and student applicants will be informed of this decision as soon as possible.
