4.REVIEW OF HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL EVENTS

Steve Illingworth informed members with regard to the Holocaust Memorial Events that had taken place in January 2012. The Broughton Community Hub had hosted a formal ceremony of remembrance – Speak up, Speak Out which had been organised by theEqualities and Cohesion Team. Jeremy Michelson, John Wilson and Steve had attended this event and agreed that the event had gone very well with good presentations, strong symbolism and a dignified approach. This event had been financially supported from the SACRE budget, with a sum of approx £600 being used for publicity and other costs.

Other successful events had been held at MediaCity,The Jewish Museum and Irlam and CadisheadHigh School (Year 9).

A short discussion followed in respect of planning for next years event and suggestions were made that, by involving more young people in contributing to the performances the messages would have been communicated out to a wider community. The location of the venue was also highlighted and it was noted that SalfordUniversity could accommodate more people and had proved to be an excellent venue in the past. Steve indicated that he would follow up this proposal, as in the past 7 or 8 schools had been involved in the event, when he attended the planning meetings for events in 2013.

Members discussed the possibility of recording the event, especially the retelling of experiences from survivors and survivors’ families. Jeremy indicated that he would check to see if any recordings existed already.

Steve confirmed that funding for the event should not be problematic for 2013 although a suggestion was made that pupils could organise some fundraising events as financialsupport for this. The benefits of this included the pupils feeling more involved, taking pride in their efforts and having an ownership of the event itself.

RESOLVED: THAT Steve Illingworth would raise the above points at planning meetings held for Holocaust Memorial Events 2013.

5. NASACRE AGM

The members were in agreement that a delegate from Salford SACRE should attend at the NASACRE AGM, as had happened in the past. The budget allowed for this expense and Alex Klein volunteered to drive to London on the 23rd May and recoup his travel expenses. In addition to this, Alex volunteered to be considered as an executive member and it was agreed that, if successful, SACRE would fund the train fare to London on the occasions he would be travelling.

RESOLVED:THAT Alex Klein attends the AGM on behalf of Salford SACRE and if successful as an executive member, SACRE would fund future train fares.

6.SACRE BUDGET

Steve Illingworth provided an update in respect of the budget for SACRE explaining that of the £1500 allocated in April 2011, the majority of this (£600 and £400) had been spent on the Holocaust Memorial Events at The Broughton Hub and Irlam and Cadishead High, respectively. The annual membership of NASACRE had also been met at a cost of around £80. He reported that the same budget of £1500 would again be allocated for 2012/13.

RESOLVED: THAT the information be noted.

7.ANNUAL SACRE REPORT

The Annual Report had been distributed with the papers for the meeting and Steve Illingworth sought questions or comments from members. He explained that this report was no longer submitted to the Department for Education but was sent to NASACRE instead.

He highlighted the launch of the Locally Agreed Syllabus which was officially accepted in April 2011 to be taught in schools from September 2011. The GCSE results for 2010 had been included in the report and members commented that the inclusion of historical data and national data for these results would be useful in order that comparisons could be made.

RESOLVED: THAT historical and national data be included in the annual report for 2011-12

8.AGREED SYLLABUS UPDATE

Steve Illingworth gave an update in regard to the embedding of the agreed syllabus

in primary and secondary schools in Salford and the creation of a hub, this consisted of a primary school teacher and a secondary school teacher developing and sharing good practice, as well as providing support and organising network meetings. The differences that existed between the Religious Education (RE) departments in the secondary schools across the city were highlighted and concerns raised.

The primary school hub was going particularly well with between 15 and 20 schools

having received support to raise the quality of teaching in RE.

Alex Klein asked Steve to remind teachers that the Jewish members of SACRE were available should they require any expertise in this area.

Steve indicated he would promote the expert support that was available through the members of SACRE at the next opportunity.

RESOLVED: THAT the information be noted.

9.ANY OTHER BUSINESS

10.DATE AND TIME OF NEXT MEETING

Steve Illingworth indicated that he would liaise with the clerk to the committee and the Chair to arrange a suitable date in June.
