This post is an opportunity to work with other providers and focus on young people in Marchwood. Planning, delivering and evaluating a wide range of youth & community work. We are interested in hearing from people who are team players with positive attitudes, who have energy, commitment and creativity to motivate young people to learn new skills and develop their abilities.

The post is for 22.5 hours per week, which are to be worked flexibly, including supporting the established village youth club and their already established evening sessions. This role includes some other evenings and weekends as and when required. All applicants need a recognised youth work qualification and must be prepared to undertake an enhanced DBS check.

Job Description

Job title: Marchwood Youth & Community Worker

Reporting to: Handy Trust Manager

Responsible for: Volunteers

Hours of work: 22.5 hours per week

(Includes weekend and unsociable hours)

Location: Marchwood Parish

Job Purpose:

To work closely with the Handy Trust Manager and team to develop youth provision in Marchwood.

To deliver an innovative range of activities to children and young people and support and participate in the established youth sessions already available.

To work with young people and other partners establishing relationships with young people from the local area.

Working alongside the Handy Trust and Marchwood Parish Council to deliver an innovative, high quality range of fun and challenging activities, taking into account individual needs.

To assist in the dissemination of good practice within the local youth support service including statutory and voluntary sector partners.

Job Activities:

1.Project Delivery:

•To work with the Handy Trust Manager and team to develop th term time and holiday provision for young people in Marchwood Parish.

•To plan and deliver detached/centre based provision.

•To work with the local schools.

•To identify needs and together with others develop and deliver a programme of imaginative activities. From the beginning consulting with the local children and young people to encourage active participation of young people, developing their skills and understanding of local community, others and the world around them.

•To develop opportunities for youth participation by consultation involving young people in the decision-making processes whereby individuals and groups take on responsibilities for themselves and others in their project and the wider community.

•To promote opportunities for informal and formal learning for children and young people by providing access to a variety of activities including recognised award programmes to support, accredit and celebrate their learning and achievement.

•Respond to individual and group needs, which include issues affecting young people, promoting self- awareness and self-esteem.

•Provide regular reports to monitor progress and evidence good practice in accordance with the Handy Trust Management Team and Marchwood Parish Councils Service Level Agreement.

2.Staff Supervision

Work with the Handy Trust Manager to:

•Deliver a full youth provision.

•Work in partnership to source community volunteers and with partners recruit, select, induce and train staff in accordance with The Handy Trust’s policies and procedures.

•Hold regular meetings with partners, workers and volunteers to review progress.

3.General

•To develop a productive working relationship with the Handy Trust team, Marchwood Parish Council and any other relevant people/personnel.

•Comply with individual responsibilities for volunteers and young people, in accordance with work role and policies and procedures in the workplace.

•Follow child protection guidelines, safeguarding policies and report any concerns using the correct procedure.

•To monitor budgets and source and write funding bids as required.

Person specification:

Essential / Desirable
Education and Qualifications / A minimum of an NVQ Level 3 qualification in youth or playwork. Or willing to self-finance and undertake level 3 training within 12 months / JNC recongnised youth work qualification
Relevant degree in youth work
Level 2 Safeguarding Children and Young People
Experience / At least 2 years’ experience of developing and delivering a programme of activities with young people both individually and in groups which enables them to pursue their learning to enhance their future
Planning, preparing and facilitating activities with young people
Monitoring and evaluating the quality of youth work
Proven experience of working within an equal opportunities framework
Budget Management / Experience of managing youth projects
Delivering training
Recruitment and selection of staff and/or volunteers
Detached and Outreach youth work
Knowledge and Understanding / Initiating, building and maintaining purposeful relationships with young people, assisting them in expressing and realising their goals
Engaging with communities to promote the interests and contributions of young people
Encouraging young people to broaden their horizons, to be effective citizens and explore their values and beliefs
Supporting young people in understanding the impact of youth work activities
Child protection issues, policies and procedures
Health and Safety Legislation / Knowledge of local government funding and provision
Knowledge and understanding of the policy and operational challenges faced by youth service providers and the broader context of young people’s services
Working in partnership with agencies to improve opportunities for young people

Skills / Advocate on behalf of young people and enable them to represent themselves and others
