InitsMonographVolume65,issuedinApril1996,theInternationalAgencyforResearchonCancer(IARC)re-evaluatedcarbonblackandconcludedthat,“thereisinadequateevidenceinhumansforthecarcinogenicityofcarbonblack”.Thecarbonblackusedcontainslessthan0.1%ofadsorbedPAHs(polynucleararomatichydrocarbons).Innon-adsorbedform,somePAHshavebeenfoundtobecarcinogenic inanimalstudies.Nocorrelatingcarcinogeniceffect,however,hasbeenobservedinhumansdue toexposuretocarbonblack.Therearestillongoingscientificdiscussionsontherelevanceoftumorigenicresponseinratstoinorganicinsolubleparticleslikecarbonblack.Manyinhalationtoxicologistsbelievethatthetumorresponseobservedinthereferencedratstudiesisspeciesspecificanddoesnotcorrelatetohumanexposure.However,theIARCevaluationinMonograph65concludedthatthereis“sufficientevidenceinexperimentalanimalforthecarcinogenicityofcarbonblack”.
