Safety Rule Poetry

Safety Rule Poetry

Your assignment is to write a poem about safety. You may choose to write about any safety rule. Review the grading rubric for specific design instructions. The assignment is due TUESDAY, September 16, 2014 or WEDNESDAY, September 17, 2014 and is worth 50 points. You may write a Haiku, Limerick or Quatrain. The following are examples:

1. Haiku – This poem is a three line poem with a specific pattern. The first line consists of five syllables, the second line contains seven syllables, and the third line has five syllables. The lines do not rhyme. An excellent haiku contains two contrasting images…notice the vibrancy of fire contrasted with the horror of death in the following poem about Bunsen burners.

Flicker yellow flame

Beauty dancing on a stick

Death to the careless.

2. Limerick –A limerick has five lines. The last words of lines one, two, and five rhyme. The last words of lines three and four rhyme. A limerick has to have a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables as seen in the following poem about wearing the proper shoes in the lab.

There once was a man from Zandal U S U U S U U S
who created a very large scandal. U S U U S U U S

as his test tube did shake, U S U U S
it proceeded to break, U S U U S
and his foot bled all over his sandal. U S U U S U U S

3. Quatrain - Four line poem with the rhyme scheme abab or aabb. The lines are of equal length like this poem about the dire consequences of not understanding directions and safety rules.

Johnny saw some dynamite

Couldn't understand it quite

But curiosity never pays

It rained Johnny for seven days.
