Rig Manager
· The “top supervisor” around the rig is the Rig Manager. The Manager is in complete charge of the rig and is responsible for the drilling crews, the equipment and the overall drilling operation. The Manager is involved in training the members of the crews, and provides the direction and leadership required to keep the operation running smoothly.
Driller
· The supervisor of each crew is the Driller. The Driller reports to the Rig Manager and is in charge of the crew while on duty. Drillers are responsible for ensuring that the drilling crew performs its job safely and efficiently, and within the regulatory requirements of the industry.
Derrickhand
· Derrickhands work in the derrick on drilling rigs high above the rig floor on a platform called a monkeyboard. Derrickhands use a harness and platform-climbing device to get to the proper position on the derrick when drill string (lengths of pipe) or casing pipe is being raised from or lowered into the hole. On the derrick, derrickhands:
o Guide the lengths of pipe into and out of the elevators (9-30 meters above the rig floor)
o Steady each pipe while it is being connected to or disconnected from the drill or casing string.
Motorhand
· The Motorhand looks after the engines and other machinery. They are also required to work on the rig floor along side the Floorhand.
· An experienced Floorhand may move into the position of Motorhand. Motorhands, as with all positions, earn their position by learning a safe work ethic, knowledge of procedures and by following those procedures.
Floorhand
· The Floorhands (usually two per crew) have a number of responsibilities. They handle the drill pipe, adding and removing one length at a time.
Responsibilities:
· · Use wrench-like tongs to smoothly and quickly connect and disconnect the lower parts of the drill pipe when it is being lowered into and raised from the hole,
· · Clean and maintain equipment,
· · Catch samples of drilled cuttings to be analyzed,
· · Mix mud and chemicals,
· · Assist in laying casing into a well after it has been drilled, and
· · Assist other members of the drilling crew wherever needed.
· · Floorhands are also responsible for “housekeeping” on the rig:
o · Cleaning the drilling floor, and
o · Painting or scrubbing around the rig.
Leasehand
· A drilling crew will also have one or more Leasehands who perform general labor and maintenance tasks around the rig site. Leasehand positions are entry-level. The position exists to help inexperienced individuals become familiar with the activities around a drilling rig.
· An inexperienced hand starts as a Leasehand and can progress through the various positions on a crew. Leasehands can move up to the position of Floorhand within a short period of time depending on their ability and availability of other positions at the rig site.
· Leasehands perform various duties around the rig. They may be required to load and unload trucks, build fences, dig ditches, and assist other crewmembers with maintenance and pre-job preparedness. Leasehands are also responsible for housekeeping on the rig and often do extensive go-for driving on remote winter roads.
