Research Work Industrial Experience

PhD research topic "Reaction Kinetics for Biodiesel Synthesis from Low-Cost Feed-Stocks: A Taguchi Approach" under the guidance of Prof. Madhu Vinjamur at the Chemical Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB). Biodiesel is considered as an alternative fuel for diesel engine due to the predicted shortage of fossil fuels, increase in the price of the petroleum, and the environmental pollution due to vehicles using fossil fuels. The cost of feedstock accounted for 60–80% of the total cost of biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel can be profitable if it is produced from low-cost feed-stocks, but such feed-stocks generally contain large amounts of free fatty acids (FFA). A key challenge in biodiesel industry is the cost-effective pretreatment of low-cost feed-stocks to reduce the FFA content to desired level prior to trans-esterification process. Statistical Taguchi method has been used for understanding of the reaction kinetics of biodiesel synthesis, both from esterification and trans-esterification processes, rather than optimization of the processes.

(i) A systematic study of reaction kinetics of biodiesel synthesis from esterification of FFA using statistical Taguchi approach is accomplished.

(a)Dependency of the apparent rate constant on temperature, reactants concentration, and catalyst loading is studied for the synthesis of biodiesel from sulfuric acid-catalyzed esterification of free fatty acid (FFA) with methanol.

(b) Qualitative and quantitative assessment of effects of reaction parameters on kinetics of biodiesel synthesis from esterification of free fatty acid is carried out.

(c) Analysis of sensitivity of Keq to errors in equilibrium composition of esterification of fatty acids at different reaction conditions is carried out.

(d)Study of parametric-interactions in esterification kinetics of free fatty acids is carried out.

(ii)Parametric-effects on the overall-reaction kinetics of biodiesel production from trans-esterification of sunflower oil with methanol using Taguchi design of experimentsarestudied.

One year research experience on the M.Tech research topic “Zinc rich primer for corrosion protection of steel” has been carried out under the guidance of Prof. R. N. Jagtap, at the Institute of Chemical Technology, University of Mumbai. In this work, the base polymer resin was modified by the sol-gel technique, and the surface treatment of pigments (mainly zinc) was done by siloxane-sol solution. Zinc rich siloxane-modifiedprimers were prepared and coated on steel, and coatings were evaluated for their anti-corrosive performance using salt spray, open circuit potential measurement, and novel electrochemical evaluation techniques such as DC polarization, EIS techniques. Also, how the addition of oxide-pigments by replacing zinc in primer affects the coating performance was studied using the same above mentioned techniques.

Industrial Experiences:Six-month of working experience in High Performance Coatings as a Technical Officer, R&D Division,Asian Paints India Limited, Mumbai.

(i) Paint formulation, processing, and performance evaluation of anti-corrosive coatings.

(ii) Characterization and determination of properties of coatings.

Three-month of research experience in Solid-State Polymerization for synthesis of Poly-Lactic Acid biodegradable polymer at Chemical Engineering Dept., IIT Bombay.
