TRAINING COURSES

SA Pork Baynesfield Academy will be a training service provider in the field of Pig Production, covering accredited training at NQF level1. The training will cover all aspects of pig production (knowledge and skills) and the management of the pig production units (business skills). Training will be focussed on the developing pig farmer to improve their knowledge and skills of pig production to ensure the economic sustainability of developing pig farmers. The emphasis of the training will also be on entrepreneurship and been a commercially viable pig unit. Training will also be provided on various levels of knowledge and skills to the following clients: pig farm owners/managers, pig farm labourers, extension officers, students, learners, the agricultural sector and the general public.

The following courses is offered at the Academy:

1. Course name :Pig production and management

2. NQF Level:The course is linked to National Certificate: Animal Production – 48970)

3. Unit standards: The following unit standards form the basis of the course: 116156 (Collect agricultural data);

116191 (Apply standard aimal feeding procedures);

116197 (Observe & handle animals);

116174 (Recognise basic breeding behaviour of farm animals);
116153 (Apply basic pig husbandry practices).

4. Theory/Practical:30% theory: 70% practical skills

5. Course content:Theory Content -

  1. Basic terminology
  2. The pig industry in South Africa
  3. Planning and budgeting
  4. Marketing and economics
  5. Breeds and breeding
  6. Basic breeding behaviour in pigs
  7. Pig welfare and basic pig health
  8. Introduction to the full cycle in a piggery from farrowing to farrowing (farrowing, weaning, heat detection, mating, dry and late gestation management of sows)
  9. Basic feeding practices at different stages of pig production
  10. Basic management of growing pigs and boars
  11. Bio-security in the piggery

Practical skills content -

  1. Preparation of the farrowing house
  2. Preparation of the sows for the farrowing house
  3. Feeding practices at different stages of pig production
  4. Cleaning and disinfecting pig housing
  5. Bio-security in the piggery
  6. Recognise breeding behaviour in pigs
  7. Conduct all management practices during farrowing
  8. Conduct the natural mating of pigs

6. Duration of course: 2 weeks - A certificate will be issued after the successful completion of the 2 weeks.

7. Starting time of the course: Monday morning 7:00. Those persons staying at the a
Academy need to be there by Sunday evening.

8. OPTION 1: Staying on the farm for 2 weeks all included (accommodation, meals and course) = R6800.00

OPTION 2: Staying on the farm for 2 weeks (accommodation, meals and course)
but not spending the weekend on the farm (Leave after lunch on Friday return for dinner on Sunday) = R6400.00

OPTION 3: Attending the course only and not using accommodation or meals (you find or use or have your own accommodation and meals) = R4500.00

OPTION 4: Attending the course and having lunch but not utilizing the accommodation = R4900
