ANIMAL ANESTHESIA INFORMATION
If you are doing anesthesia, please complete the following:
Complete only if applicable to your project.
Be sure that the individual(s) who will administer anesthesia, perform surgery, or monitor recovery have been appropriately trained and are noted in Section A. In addition, there MUST be a trained person monitoring the animal at ALL times while the animal is under anesthesia.
S.1. / List the drug(s) that will be used for balanced anesthesia. (Please complete SECTIONS E. listing all you list here.)
Include anticholinergics, muscle relaxants, sedatives, tranquilizers and anesthetics.
Drug or Combination of Drugs / Species / Use
e.g. ketamine and xylazine / e.g. rabbit / e.g. general anesthesia
YES / NO
S.2. / Do you plan to use specially modified animals?(e.g. diabetics, transgenics, any disease or condition that could affect the anesthesia; If YES, please describe)
YES / NO
S.3. / Will food be withheld? (If YES, complete the following) Normally, certain species are not held off food. When they are, it is for specific reasons such as regurgitation with anesthesia or the need to empty the GI tract. Age and health should be considered as to the length of time off food. If food will be withheld, it is your responsibility to see that it is done either by completing the task yourself, or by making arrangements with the caretakers to do so. Other than rodents, most animals should be fasted prior to anesthesia.
S.3.a. / How long will food be withheld?
S.4. / Please approximate how long the animal will be anesthetized (if multiple surgeries describe for each).
S.5. / Please describe anesthetic monitoring procedures (include frequency of monitoring). When surgery is finished, there is a period of time until the animal is stable. During this period, what will be done for the animal to ensure a safe recovery with minimum distress? How often will the animal be observed? Will controlled heat be provided, will eyes be protected, etc.?
YES / NO
S.6. / Will animals undergo more than one anesthesia? (If YES, complete the following)
S.6.a. / How many times will an animal be anesthetized?
S.6.b. / What will be the interval between anesthesias?
S.7. / It is imperative that animals be closely monitored during anesthesia recovery. Endotracheal tubes should be removed when animals begin to regain jaw motions. Animals should be placed in a secure containment area and kept warm. For rodents and rabbits, paper should be used initially for bedding, not the normal bedding. Animals that lay on their sides should be rotated to the other side about every 5 minutes. Animals should be placed in a sternal position as soon as the animal can maintain itself. Vital signs such as breathing and heart sounds (if possible) should be monitored until the animal has regained consciousness. Anesthesia recovery is not complete until the animal can stand on its own. If other arrangements for recovery should be noted, please complete below.
YES / NO
S.8. / Will paralytic agents be used, if yes, please complete the following
S.8.a. / Justify why the paralytic agent is needed.
S.8.b. / Explain how the animal will be monitored to assure that the animal is properly anesthetized while the paralytic agent is being used. (Note, muscles tension and reflex can not be used. )
