DEAR MR. JEFFERSON essay

You will be writing a letter to Thomas Jefferson about his document the Declaration of Independence. Use this sheet as your guide.

“We hold these truths to be self –evident(obvious), that all men are created equal, that they are endowed(given) by their Creator with certain unalienable(can’t take away) rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted(created) among men, deriving(getting) their just powers from the consent (permission) of the governed: that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish(end) it, and to institute new government, laying it foundations on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. “ (Pages 86-89 in your book)

Paragraph 1- Introduce yourself- make up a colony you are from and what you do, comment of how/when you heard about the DOI, discuss the background of the DOI, talk about how you understand the complaints but not the above paragraph and will discuss that with him.

Paragraph 2- take three of the complaints against the king and discuss them

Paragraph 3 – discuss this quote “We hold these truths to be self –evident(obvious), that all men are created equal…” Talk about what you think he meant, what it means to you (as a Colonist or new American), who is included/excluded, etc, what will this mean to people in 236 years (2012), etc, how he might have come up with the idea, etc.

Paragraph 4- discuss this quote-…that they are endowed(given) by their Creator with certain unalienable(can’t take away) rights…What does he think this means, what do you think this means, what might someone in 2012 think it means, who is ‘Creator’ and why does he use that word, etc

Paragraph 5- discuss this quote- that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. What does he, you and someone from 2012 think it means, what are examples of each one, where did he come up with these ideas

Paragraph 6- discuss this quote- That to secure these rights, governments are instituted(created) among men, deriving(getting) their just powers from the consent (permission) of the governed: that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish(end) it, and to institute new government…What does he, you and someone from 2012 think it means, how would it be done, etc

Paragraph 7- conclusion- reargue some of you main points and then reflect on how this Declaration of Independence will affect you, the war and future people in 2012.

Use proper grammar. Paragraphs should be about 5 sentences each.
