New Views in Hearing Awareness, Disorders and Conservation

With the increasing incidence of noise-induced hearing disorders, we must promote hearing awareness to the general public.

This presentation will provide an overview of the techniques employed in The Hearing Conservation Workshop to teach hearing awareness. After 6 years and over 80 workshops, attendees develop a sense of ownership of their hearing. Once that is established, they want to take care of themselves and understand disorders such as tinnitus, hyperacusis, and hearing loss.

Attendees will be able to……

  • Understand the pervasive “culturalignorance” that results in people abusing their hearing
  • Discover new ways of thinking about sound and hearing to more effectively reach the general public
  • Develop new strategies for integrating lifestyle issues as conversation points with patients or customers.

1. People are unaware of many, non-music hazards to their hearing.T

2. There are many hearing protection products available in stores like CVS and Walgreens.F

3. Loud sound you like is less damaging than loud sound you donÂ’t like.F

4. Many sporting events are as loud or louder than most popular music concerts.T

5. We have Guttenburg to thank for our overly visual orientation to life.T

Musicians (and Audio Engineers) . . . A Special Cohort with Special Needs . . . Reaching Out with Their Own Language

This presentation will introduce attendees to the language, knowledge and mindset of music and audio professionals. By understanding how they work with and think about music and sound, hearing science professionals and manufacturers of hearing protection products can develop new “tools” for reaching out to this unique group. The goal is to better educate them about the “occupationalhazards” of their work, and avoid disorders such as tinnitus, hyperacusis and sensory hearing loss.

Attendees will be able to….

  • Discover new ways of thinking about sound and hearing, particularly in the language used by professionals in audio and music
  • Develop new ways of presenting basic concepts of hearing physiology and disorders to musicians and audio engineers
  • Broaden their own understanding of sound and audio systems by relating with principles and systems of hearing physiology

1. Noticeable hearing loss is what drives musicians to seek an audiologistÂ’s help.F
2. It is easy for a musician to play with hearing protection.F
3. In-ear monitors protect hearing.F
4. Musicians and audio engineers develop a much higher level of hearing “acuity” than non-musicians and most audiologists. T
5. Most of the principles that explain the hearing mechanism can be explained as though it was a sound system. T

Welcome to a new way of managing tinnitus

Personalized andpatient-driven, the Levo System gives hearing professionals the ability tocreate custom sound therapy based on the unique tinnitus sound of each individual. Unlike a pitch match, which focuses solely on frequency, the Levo System identifies and recreates the tinnitus sound as a whole. That personalsound print becomes the basis for nightly therapy. Patient use and progress is recorded within the system to track the level of tinnitus relief over time.

No more one size fits all solutions. No more trying to guess what your patient is experiencing. With Levo, you can hear what your patienthearsand createa therapy specific to his or her needs.
