Russian Patriarchate Choir of MoscowBrings its

Authentic and Traditional Music to theWorld Currents Series

October 24, 2007 in Samueli Theater

COSTA MESA, CA – The Russian Patriarchate Choir of Moscow will debut at the Orange County Performing Artscenter in the World Currents Series on October 24, 2007 in Samueli Theater. Since it was founded 25 years ago, the choir has brought the Russian Orthodox musical tradition to an international audience through its acclaimed recordings and live performances. World Currents is the Performing Artscenter’s newest series, which showcases an eclectic mix of international artists.

The New York Times says, “Utterly authoritative…There is nothing quite like the sound of a Russian choir singing early Russian sacred music.” Audiences rave about the sheer beauty of the choir’s singing and its ability to create hypnotic, moving and profoundly atmospheric music.

Adhering to the traditional Russian Orthodox manner, the choir consists of 12-13 male members including its founder and director, Anatoly Grindenko. In Russia, the group is an actual church choir performing ancient spiritual music during religious services.

In addition to performing, the singers are dedicated scholars of the repertoire of the male voice. They have rediscovered and reconstructed Orthodox Church music from early transcripts that had lain in obscurity for centuries. The choir has spent years decoding the manuscripts to recreate this forgotten music.

The choir gave its first solo concert in 1987 in Moscow Conservatory’s Malyi Zal. Since then, the group has appeared throughout Europe and Scandinavia at festivals in Utrecht, London, Paris, Maastricht, Barcelona and Ravenna. They perform a full range of music including 16th-19th century liturgy, medieval chants, Russian folk songs and more recent church music by composers such as Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Gretchaninov, Sviridov, Martinov and Pelecis.

Tickets to the Russian Patriarchate Choir of Moscow at the Orange County Performing Artscenter are $36, and go on sale September 30. They will be available at the Performing Artscenter Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa, by calling 714.556.2787 or online at For inquiries about group ticket discounts, call the Performing Artscenter Group Sales office at 714.755.0236.
