BACKGROUND

Rural Financial Services (RFS) is a locally owned and operated business in Nome. It is the goal of RFS to give the residents of rural Alaska the necessary tools and knowledge to be financially successful and independent.

Our first initiative is to install Automated Teller Machines (ATM) in the villages. Typically, ATM’s have been thought of something only people with bank accounts benefit from. However, with Quest Cards for Public Assistance, the U-Card for Unemployment, the Direct Express Debit MasterCard for Social Security benefits, and the large number of other Reloadable Debit Cards being put into circulation, it is no longer necessary to have a bank account to enjoy the benefits of an ATM. It is also likely the villages will continue to see many more of these products in the future for other benefit programs.

What are the benefits of having an ATM installed at your business/organization?

1)Brings people to your business/organization. Whether your business sells items or offers various community programs, an ATM at your location will generate revenue and/or draw people to your organization, giving it the opportunity to promote what you have to offer.

2)If you receive payments for services (e.g. water/sewer), an ATM is an easy way for customers to withdraw money to pay for these services.

3)Your business’s cash reserves will no longer be depleted by acting as a bank for community members.

4)Less bounced checks. Simply refer your customers to the ATM machine if worried about a customer’s check bouncing.

5)Most of all, your community members will now have a means of acquiring cash for everyday use.

RFS has prepared a short survey to provide us with the pros and cons for each location available for the placement of an ATM. Fill out a separate survey for all possible locations in your community.
