1Introduction

The purpose of this document is to provide advice, information and rules concerning the procedures to be followed for the Paton Award competition.

2Purpose of the competition

The Evgenij Paton Prize will be awarded by the International Institute of Welding every year.

The Prize will be awarded to an individual who has made a significant contribution to science and technology through his (her) life time dedication to «applied research and development in the field of advanced technologies, materials and equipment for welding and allied processes».

Specifically, the Prize will be awarded in one of two possible categories:

Odd years - Category (A): for applied research and development which has been successfully utilized in different industries and new spheres of human endeavours,

Even years - Category (B): for the development of new industrial equipment, materials, and structures using welding and allied processes, which has been successfully implemented by industry.

3Nominations

3.1Nominations may be made by members of the Board of Directors, the Technical Management Board, or any Member Society.

3.2Nominations shall be accompanied by a concise (one or two page) summary of the nominee’s achievements in applied research and/or development, and a list of significant publications by the nominee.

3.3Nominations shall be submitted to the IIW Secretariat by November 30th in the year preceding the year of the award, and then distributed to the «Jury» at least one month before the Technical Management Board’s meeting in January.

4Procedures

4.1The nominations will be considered by a Jury appointed for the purpose and chaired by the Chairman of the Technical Management Board. The Jury will be comprised of members of the Technical Management Board appointed for the purpose, and an individual representing the National Welding Committee of the Ukraine and the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute. Details of the Jury’s nominee for the award will be circulated for approval to the Technical Management Board. The TMB decision shall be approved by the Board of Directors.

4.2Members of the Technical Management Board are eligible for nomination for the award, in which case they may not serve on the Jury.

4.3The confirmation of this prestigious award will be made by the Board of Directors of the IIW, upon the recommendation of the Jury which will have been endorsed by the Technical Management Board, during the Board’s January meetings.

4.4Unsuccessful nominees will be re-considered by the Jury when it considers the candidates for the next award two years later.

4.5The Representative of the National Welding Committee of Ukraine will present the Medal and Diploma to the winner during the Opening Ceremony of the next IIW Annual Assembly.

5Award

The Evgenij Paton Prize consists of a Medal and Diploma given by the National Welding Committee of the Ukraine and the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute.

The Award also includes a visit by the winner to the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute in Kiev, Ukraine.
