1Introduction

The purpose of this document is to provide advice and information and to outline the rules governing the procedures to be followed for the Halil Kaya Gedik Award.

2Purpose of the Award

The Halil Kaya Gedik Award is awarded annually by the International Institute of Welding, sponsored by the Turkish Delegation.

The Prize is awarded to a Scientist or Engineer who has madeoutstanding contributions towelding science and technologyin one of the three following categories:

Category A -The development ofconsumables

Category B - The industrial implementationof arc welding

Category C - The training andeducation of young people

3Background Information

Presented for the first time in 2013, the Award honours the lifelong contributions of Turkish entrepreneur andphilanthropist, Halil Kaya Gedik, one of the first welding engineers in Turkey. The founder/owner of Gedik Welding (1963), he also established Gedik Education and Social Benefits Foundation (GEV) which prioritizes welding education and training and Gedik University, where Welding Technology is a major subject on the curriculum.

During his lifetime, Mr Gedik received various accolades for his numerous charitable works, including the Outstanding Service Medal awarded by the Turkish Grand National Assembly. His enduring altruism included the construction of several public schools as “social responsibility projects,” the support of the Turkish Welding Technology Academy (TKTA) and the establishment of a non-profit welding training centre which has benefitted almost 40,000 people since 1994.Indeed, Mr Gedik was a pillar of the international materials joining community until his untimely passing in 2012.

4 Nominations

a - Nominations may be submitted by Members of the IIW Board of Directorsand the Technical

Management Board, Chairs of IIW Working Units, or by any IIW Member Society.

b - Eligible nominations under Categories A and B may be in the form of papers, patents, theses or

research reportswhich addresseither:

The development of welding consumables (electrodes,wires, fluxes...)

or

The novel application of welding technologies tolarge industrial projects

c - Eligible nominations under Category C must illustratesignificant contributions to welding

training/education of young people and must therefore be supported by the nominee’s detailed CV.

No other documentation or material will be considered.

d - Individuals who are currently serving on the IIW Board of Directors and/or the TMB are not eligible for

nomination for the Award.

e - The Award will not be granted posthumously.

f - All nominations must be submitted to the IIW Secretariat by November 30th of the year preceding the

year of the award. All nominations will then be electronically circulated to the Panel of Judges, at least one month before the January Intermediate Meeting of the Technical Management Board.

5Procedure

Nominations will be reviewed by a Panel of Judges, to be chaired by the Chair of the Technical Management Board. The Panel of Judges comprisesMembers of the Technical Management Board and a designated representative of the Responsible Member Society for Turkey, Gedik Education and Social Benefits Foundation (GEV).

Voting is carried out based on a “Formula One” points system.

The Judges’ selection of the Winner is endorsed by the IIW Board of Directors.

Unsuccessful nominations will remain eligible for renewed consideration during a 2-year period.

6The Award

The Halil Kaya Gedik Award consists of a trophy fashioned out of cast golden electrodes and a certificate, both presented by the Head of the Turkish Delegation or a representative of Gedik Education Foundation and Social Benefits Foundation (GEV) during the Opening Ceremony of the IIW Annual Assembly.

The winner also receives a 7-day sponsored trip to Istanbul, for a visit of the Welding Electrode Factory and Welding Department of Gedik University.

The full financial conditions of this visit are to be defined directly with the Turkish Delegation.
