RSPN Overtime

The Task:

We have recently reviewed 11 reading strategies that all good readers should know and use. This is worth sharing! It is our responsibility to promote literacy to improve our society. Let’s start in our own backyard...SCASD elementary!

Your job is to record yourself reading a children’s picture book while modeling a reading strategy. You will model this strategy by completing a Think Aloud that taps into your metacognitive thoughts. This will be shared with the elementary teachers to use to teach these strategies to your younger peers. Let’s give them a sneak peak into 8th grade Academic Literacy!

The Preparation:

0With a partner, choose one of the children’s picture books from the list. Read the book with your partner several times. Practice reading the book and bringing it to life. This will require you to think about maintaining and adjusting fluency, even if that is not your main strategy.

0Once you fully understand the story, decide together what the best RSPN strategy would work best for that particular book. For instance, if a book has a lot of dialogue or sound effects, maintaining and adjusting fluency would be a good choice. If the text is challenging or has a lot of strange ideas, monitoring and correcting may be the best option.

0Next, come up with a creative signal that matches the ideas in the book that you will use to signify that your inner voice is speaking. This should help clarify between what is said in your head versus the book.

0Once you have your strategy and signal, write down the6 best parts in the book where you can use that strategyand what you’re going to say when you encounter them using a storyboard.

0Then, practice inserting your metacognitive voice and your RSPN strategy into the reading by thinking aloud. Keep your metacognitive thinking focused and brief. Make sure that your metacognition doesn’t overwhelm the story.

0Once you practice, plan, and feel confident about your reading, you will then video yourselves reading the book with your Think Aloud.

The Requirements:

  • Must choose an RSPN strategy that is appropriate and lends itself well to the text.
  • Must demonstrate the RSPN strategy appropriately at least 6 times total.
  • Must bring the book to life in a way that would help an elementary understand the text better.
  • Must consider maintaining and adjusting fluency regardless of your RSPN strategy.
  • Must create an appropriate metacognitive signal that allows the audience to know you’re tapping into your metacognitive thoughts (i.e. bell, ding, snap, etc. BE CREATIVE!). Your signal should NOT be distracting!
  • Must cooperate with your partner and share the requirements equally.
