Purpose of the RSPCA

RSPCA (Victoria) is a non-government, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The organisation, its role and profile, has grown significantly in recent years. The status of the RSPCA and of the RSPCA (Victoria) in particular, as the most relevant, valid and significant animal welfare body is valued and must be maintained.

The RSPCA has continually enhanced its capacity to care for and protect animals in recent years through its animal care, rehabilitation and adoption centres and rapid response to an increasing number of animal welfare and cruelty prevention issues in our community.

Position Purpose

To provide high quality veterinary care to all sick and injured animals presented to RSPCA by ensuring the provision of quality service and education to promote responsible animal guardianship.

The role supports Pets Place in the delivery of key strategic directions to increase awareness of animal welfare and support income generation by providing a high level veterinary service to the private clients within the local community. The role also provides veterinary services to the local RSPCA Ballarat shelter.

Accountabilities

  • Enhance the reputation of the RSPCA as a leading provider of veterinary care to both private clients and shelter animals by providing quality veterinary care, conducting clinical consultations, providing in depth advice in complicated areas of veterinary science and performing routine and complicated surgical procedures.
  • Contribute to a high level of customer service by providing correct, reliable information and advice to all clients in a courteous, professional and informative manner, monitoring processes that address the needs of the client and identify areas of improvement and change.
  • Effectively communicate and negotiate with clients both internal and private as required to ensure an optimal animal welfare outcome is achieved.
  • Contribute towards the strategic direction of the organisation to ensure organisational effectiveness through the improvement of internal processes and procedures to maximise efficiency and improve performance.
  • Ensure the vision and values of RSPCA (Victoria) are implemented, by leading and managing in accordance with the People Management Framework, including selection, development, performance management, consultation and provision of a safe workplace.

Organisational Structure

Organisational Context

The RSPCA’s future direction is to develop a sustainable organisation whose income generation can support Animal Welfare issues across the state. This role requires the capacity to prioritisea large number of competing demands to ensure that veterinary outcomes are achieved and the organisational goals and objectives are met.

The cornerstone of RSPCA regional veterinary activity is providing services to our private clients and the treatment, rehabilitation and rehoming of stray and unwanted or seized animals that are presented to the Regional Shelters. This animal welfare work usually requires a unique and flexible perspective and often involves independent consideration, along with an in-depth knowledge of RSPCA policies and procedures. .

Organisational Relationships

Internal

  • Reports to the Client Services Manager
  • Strong liaison with Pets Place Assistant Manager and Ballarat Shelter Supervisor.
  • Regular liaison with the Chief Veterinarian and Senior Veterinarians based at Burwood.
  • Liaison with locally based RSPCA Inspector on matters pertaining to cases.
  • Regular liaison with other key stakeholders within the organisation.

External

  • To provide a high quality veterinary service and advice to the general public to enhance the image of the RSPCA.
  • To provide clear explanation to the general public of the RSPCA Animal Welfare Policy.
  • Liaison with local Veterinary service providers.

Other

  • This role is based at RSPCA Pets Place Ballarat
  • Daily visits to the RSPCA Ballarat shelter, travel distance 4.5km’s

Extent of Authority

  • As provided by the Victorian Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board.
  • Acts within the RSPCA corporate policy framework and relevant legislation.
  • Acts within the RSPCA policy, legislation and codes of practice pertaining to animal welfare.
