General

The Garfield County Fair Board and its representatives reserve the right to hold a contest to judge and select any participantsat its discretion in accordance with royalty rules. It has the ultimate authority over the royalty contest, contestants, crowned royalty and others involved.

Please read all of the paperwork thoroughly for changes.

Type all parts of the royalty application. Failure to do so will result in penalties.

Keep a copy of the Royalty Guide for your own reference.

Contest Eligibility Requirement

  1. To apply for position of queen, you must be at least 16 years old and no older than 21 years old as if June 1, 2011.

To apply for position of Lady-In-Waiting you must be between the ages of 14 and no older than 21 years old as of June 1, 2011.

To apply for position of princess, you must be at least 10 years old and no older than 15 years old as of June 1, 2011.

  1. Return all required paperwork listed on the checklist on the last page of the Royalty Guide 2011.
  2. Parents and participants must comply with Garfield County Fair rules and regulations for the full year of rein.
  3. Must be single and never married/pregnant.
  4. Contestants cannot hold titles of other rodeos at the time of tryouts. Current Garfield County Fair royalty may tryout consecutively.
  5. Application must be completed and turned in by the October 27 to the Garfield County Extension Office or Royalty Coordinator, Lyndsay Smith, to be eligible to compete.
  6. Winning contestants are expected to attend royalty clinic November 5th and 6th, 2010 in Colorado Springs.

Contest Rules and Proceedings

  1. Deadline for the application is October 27, 2010 and must be turned in to the Garfield County Extension Office or Lyndsay Smith, royalty coordinator.No Exceptions.

The contest will be held October 30, 2010 at the Garfield County Fairgrounds in Rifle, Colorado. The location and date is subject to change.

  1. The contest for each position will occurOctober 30, 2010when there is at least one applicant for each position. If there are not enough applicants for a particular position there will only be a queen and princess. The Royalty Coordinator and the Fair Board also reserve the right to appoint qualified applicants to fill positions if there are not enough contestants at tryouts.
  2. The year of rein will begin when results are announced at the2011 contest and will continue until new royalty is chosen at the 2011 Garfield County Fair & Rodeo. If a contest has to be postponed due to lack of contestants, the rein will be from the time of crowning until the contest the same year. The previous years’ royalty will not make any more appearances after she hands over her title at the tryouts.
  3. Current royalty is expected to assist with the tryouts if not participating in the present contest.
  4. Contestants will be judged and scored in the categories of application, appearance, personal interview, rodeo knowledge, horsemanship and riding ability, written test, modeling and speech.
  5. Contestants must be able to ride and have access to a suitable horse for contest, rodeos and all other events. Suitability will be determined at the contest and is left to the discretion of the coordinator and the Garfield County Fair Board.
  6. All contestants, parents, queen and princess must be friendly, courteous and respectful at all times to guests, other contestants, judges, Garfield County Fair Board members and animals.
  7. Contestants and parents must submit all questions and/or concerns in writing to the royalty coordinator.No exceptions. If questions and/or concerns are not answered satisfactorily, then contestants and parents may submit the same (in writing) to the Garfield County Fair Board. They are expected to treat all Garfield County Fair Board members with the utmost respect at all times.
  8. Contestants must know the basic rules of the Garfield County Fair rodeo events, rodeo sponsors and be able to explain these topics for rodeo guests and spectators.
  9. A parent or guardian must be available to assists in any part of contest; otherwisethey are asked to only be spectators during the contest. If a contestant needs help, she can ask permission from the judges for parental help.
  10. If there is evidence that royalty, contestants or their parents do not follow the rules above, only one verbal or written warning will be issued. If there are any other infractions, titles and sponsorships may be revoked by Garfield County Fair at any time. If this occurs, all Garfield County Fair Royalty items issued must be returned and the former title holder is not eligible to be a future contestant for the Garfield County Royalty.
  11. Garfield County royalty is prohibited from competing in any rodeo events held on the nights they are representing the position of Queen or Princess. Their priority is being royalty members and not a rodeo contestant during the rodeo which they represent.
  12. After completion of rein as Queen or Princess, all reusable items purchased by the Fair Board must be returned. This includes flags, saddle drapes, saddle pads and/or any other items deemed reusable by the coordinator at the time of purchase.
  13. The Queen may be eligiblefor a $500 scholarship after successfully completing her rein.She must follow all other guidelines specified by the sponsor of the scholarship to quilify. Her and her parents/guardians must follow all rules and expectations specified in the Royalty Guide to be eligible.

Royalty Duties and Expectations

These duties are general and not limited to the following:

Duties:

Royalty members act as Garfield County Fair spokesmen and represent the sport of rodeo. Because they attract a lot of publicity, they are easily recognizable on a daily basis. Therefore, royalty and parents must always be respectful, organized, helpful and friendly. As changes in plans and events change, each person is expected to handle situations in a courteous manner.

Queen:

-To oversee theattendant and princess for each rodeo and other events.

-To work with the coordinator in organizing appearances, ideas, etc. She must communicate with the rest of the royalty and parents to help plan each appearance.

- She puts together prize bags as specified and gathers royalty to present all prizes.

-She assigns sponsor flag carriers for each event.

-The queen organizes and arranges all flags, prizes and equipment for each event.

-The queen extends invitations to other royalty she meets and can take up other invitations for other appearances. These guest appearances must be pre-approved by the royalty coordinator and by Garfield County Fair two weeks prior to the appearance.

-Coordinating the grand entry performances and organizing practices as needed with other royalty and parents.

-Arriving to each rodeo performance early to organize sponsor flags, decide who will carry them, along with any other duties that need to be completed.

-To help with various events throughout the rodeo.

-When the royalty is at other events, she must follow the instructions of the event organizers and coordinators and to make sure the princess do the same.

-Each week inform in writing to the announcer about the royalty biographies and to tell him or her about any visiting royalty or other special performances prior to the team roping slack events.

-Coordinate clothing for royalty for each appearance.

-Signing autographs after each Garfield County Fair rodeo with her own appropriate signature.

-Interviews as they arise.

-Coordinating the photo shoot and helping to create slicks (autograph sheets). She needs to bring enough slicks to each event for all three royalty to autograph.

Lady-in-Waiting

- As Lady-in-Waiting this is your apprenticeship and your time to learn. Cooperation with the Queen and the Royalty Coordinator is expected. If you feel the Queen is not performing her duty properly, speak to her first. If the matter cannot be resolved, the chain of command is to discuss it with the Royalty Coordinator and then the President of the Fair Board.

-This is a two-year commitment if and only if all rules and guidelines are followed and is a strong candidate for Queen.

-She must reapply for the Queen position and fully participate in tryouts at the Garfield County Fair 2011.

-Holding the position of Lady-in-Waiting does not guarantee the position of Queen the following year.

Princess:

-Works closely with the queen with planning and making appearances.

-Flag carrying

-Helping with most rodeo events.

-Help Queen and Lady-in Waiting to educate spectators about rodeo events and any other questions.

-Signing autographs after each Garfield County Fair rodeo with her own appropriate signature.

Coordinator: -Works closely with Garfield County Fair, the queen, princess and their parents.

-Plans appearances made by the royalty, send in parade, clinic, luncheons and other entry forms, assist at each rodeo and to coordinate all participants and parents for each event.

-Planning photographs, printing of slicks, magazine and newspaper write ups.

-Order clothing, crowns, sashes, buckles and to make sure clothing fits properly, as adjustments may have to be done by a seamstress.

-Make sure the equipment is in good repair at the beginning of the rodeo season and follows up as needed.

-Organize and run the royalty tryouts each year, including updating the royalty guide, judge’s sheets, judges and awards.

-Working closely with the Garfield County Fair Board to plan, organize and addressing situations and questions and/or changes that need to be made in the program.

- Responsible for reporting anybehavior issues to the proper Garfield County Fair Board members which will also be recorded.

-Delegate duties as needed.

-To assist at the Garfield County Fair rodeos to ensure the rodeo runs as smoothly as possible and royalty is prepared and carries out duties efficiently.

Parents:

-Only ONE parent MUST assist in the back of the house for each rodeo. Absolutely now siblings or friends allowed in the back of the house for safety reasons.

-To assist with appearances as needed.

-To ensure that royalty is early and properly turned out for each appearance.

-At least one parent must be present and available to help at each rodeo, and all other appearances.

-Responsible for getting the child and horse to each event and is prepared to carry out duties in a timely and efficient manor.

-The Garfield County Fair Board pays for and contributes to the royalty clothing (approved by the coordinator and the Garfield County Fair Board), sashes, crowns, buckles, scholarships and entry fees. Royalty members are able to get sponsorship money that needs to be pre-approved by the royalty coordinator. All other expenses are absorbed by the royalty families.

Expectations:Each participant must always be ready to assist with events in the rodeo and at other appearances. Carrying flags is required for each royalty member at every Garfield County Fair rodeo. They may be asked to carry flags, among other duties, at other appearances.

If a horse or tack is going to be borrowed, the participant must make her own arrangements.

Royalty members are not allowed to compete or exhibit in any Garfield County Fair Rodeo events as their duties are priority.

Attendance: Each royalty member can only miss two appearances to meet royalty expectations, with the exception of missing a Garfield County Fair rodeo. Attendance will be recorded and reported to the appropriate Garfield County Fair Board members. Appearances will be planned by the queen and coordinator and each family will be notified accordingly. Royalty can accept any other opportunities that arise and some may have short notice.

The queen and princess must be willing to represent the Garfield County Fair in at least three local parades, three additional appearances in Garfield County and at least three other events outside of the county in rodeos, parades or other promotional events. These appearances may be done with or without horses. Garfield County Fair will supply a list of choices which can be revised.

All prizes and awards won at parades are to be given to theFair Board for display.

The queenand princess will be supplied with posters and other advertising materials to hand out in Garfield County and at other appearances they attend.

Appearance: Royalty members and horses must be spotless and well-groomed for each appearance. Each girl must always wear her crown, sash and belt buckle to each appearance. She must wear stylish western attire, have her hair styled and makeup done appropriate for her age. She may never travel with curlers in

her hair, etcetera, and be presentable at any time even if not making an appearance that day. She must always be friendly and approachable to the public.

After each Garfield County Fair rodeo, the royalty signs autographs at a table by the exit.

Choices of clothing will be provided by Garfield County Fair Board and the royalty coordinator. Since Garfield County Fair provides shirts, you are expected to wear the complete outfits unless otherwise notified. The queen, lady-in-waiting and princess must purchase their own black boots, black Wrangler jeans, black belt and black hat. These items will coordinate with shirts provided by the Fair Board. Any other choices of clothing need to be approved by the coordinator.

It is best that royalty members are independent of parents and friends when making appearances to make her more approachable for autographs and photos; however, parents do need to be available if needed.

No visible body piercings or tattoos other than single holes for earrings allowed at any time.

Behavior: Each member and parents/guardians must always be on their best behavior while holding this title. People recognize royalty wherever they are at every time of day. Whether in royalty attire or at school functions, people know who you are. All royalty and parents/guardians are expected to behave in a polite and gracious manner at all times. Arguing with anyone (this includes parents and siblings) yelling, talking, laughing loudly and “goofing off” will be considered inappropriate behavior. Remember you are in the public eye and you must represent the Garfield County Fair & Rodeo properly. Above all you are there to publicize the events in a professional manor.

No alcohol, drugs or public affection toward a boyfriend at any time during an appearance.

The queen, lady-in-waitingand princess must be willing to be photographed and sign autographs throughout the entire year of rein in all appearances with or without horses. They shall act as official spokespersons for the Garfield County Fair and must always appear approachable.

Cell phone use must be postponed until after any appearance. Necessary calls/messaging must be done in private and very brief.

Timeliness: Each royalty member is required to be early(suited up and saddled up a minimum of 30 minutes prior) for each appearance and wearing the required garments. This is not limited to the Garfield County Fair rodeos and interviews. This is organized by the queen, lady-in-waiting and coordinator.

Knowledge: Know about the Garfield County Fair Rodeos, events, participants, stock contractor, secretary (including phone number) and current events for rodeo. Each person needs to be able to explain events and equipment used to a stranger/spectator. She must also know about the town, attractionsand current events and be able to communicate them to others. Use the attached study guide and other resources to stay informed about the latest rodeo news.

Mount: Each royalty member must ride a suitable mount for every appearance including rodeos and parades.If there is ever any doubt as to the appropriateness of the horse, the queen and/or coordinator has authority to dismiss the horsepermanently. The rider must always demonstrate control in any rodeo, parade or other appearance. If a horse is deemed unsuitable, it will be dismissed permanently. If this occurs, there will be a verbal notice followed up by a written notice signed by the royalty coordinator and the royalty member and parents.Horse and tack must always be spotless and in good repair. The horse must be clipped, have proper farrier care, current vaccines, deworming, coggins and brand inspection (with the horse at all times for traveling).
