Royal seal of approval for new Deputy Lieutenants

Fivesenior figures have been named as new Deputy Lieutenants of The County of South Yorkshire.The role of a Deputy Lieutenant involves supporting and deputising for Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Andrew Coombe, on a variety of occasions such as Royal visits to the county and representing the Lieutenancy at ceremonial and other events.Appointment to this position is by the Lord-Lieutenant, subject only to The Queen not disapproving of the granting of their commission.

The following people have been appointed fromSheffield:

  • The Very Reverend PeterEdward Bradley, Dean of Sheffield Cathedral, Chair and founder of Finance for Sheffield, trading as Sheffield Money
  • John Steven Cowling Esq ACA, a retired chartered accountant, Chair of Music in the Round
  • Miss Stella McHugh, Head of External Engagement , Sheffield Students’ Union

  • Mrs Janet Wheatley, Chief Executive, Voluntary Action Rotherham

fromBarnsley:

  • Colonel George Kilburn MBE, Chief Executive of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, trustee The Yorkshire Regiment Charitable Trust

The Lord-Lieutenant, Andrew Coombe said:

I’m delighted to have been able to appoint such a diverse group of people to become Deputy Lieutenants. All are outstanding servants of South Yorkshire. In their different fields they have contributed to making life better for the rest of us, and will continue to do so.’

NOTES TO EDITORS

  • The Lord-Lieutenantis The Queen’s representative in the county to which he or she is appointed.
  • The Lord-Lieutenant is supported by a Vice Lord-Lieutenant and a number of Deputy Lieutenants that he or she appoints. The Lord-Lieutenant appoints a number of Deputy Lieutenants depending on the county's population; the current South Yorkshire establishment is 36.
  • Lord-Lieutenants were first appointed to a number of English historic counties by Henry VIII in the 1540s, primarily to raise the militia.

The responsibilities of today’s Lord-Lieutenants include:-

  • Arranging visits of members of the Royal family and escorting Royal visitors
  • Presenting medals and awards on behalf of the Sovereign, and advising on honours nominations
  • Participating in civic, voluntary and social activities in the county, including Citizenship ceremonies
  • Contact with local units of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army Royal Air Force and their associated cadet forces
  • Involvement with the local Magistracy asChairman of the Magistrates Advisory Committees
