GENERAL DETAILS

The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital is part of the Manchester Children's Hospital Trust. It provides general paediatric services (excluding neonatology) for Salford and many paediatric specialty services for the north west region. The medical specialties include cardiology, endocrinology, haematology, metabolic medicine, nephrology, neurology, respiratory medicine and oncology. The surgical specialities include ENT, general paediatric surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery and urology. In addition, the University Department of Child Psychiatry is situated here with an NHS counterpart. There is a Department of Clinical Genetics.

Hepatitis B Certificate

Occupational Health Department require proof of Hep B immunisation on day of arrival. You must obtain this yourself from the Occupational Health Department at Hope Hospital as they will not allow this information to be released to the Undergraduate Department.

Measles, Chicken pox & Rubella screening

Students attending clinics at RMCH must have had screening for measles, Chicken pox and rubella. Chicken pox and rubella should have been done as part of medical screen when you first started. All students should be aware that a screen for measles will be undertaken by Occupational Health at RMCH.

Security

Please wear your ID badge at all times whilst in the hospital.

Car Parking

The car park is situated opposite the hospital and there is a charge of £1.00 daily.

IT and Library

The medical library is situated in the Giving for Living Postgraduate Centre. However, undergraduate seminars mainly take place in the Gaisford Unit.

Post

All post addressed to medical students will be delivered to Dr Price’s sec, Gaisford Unit and can be collected from there.

Arrival

Students should report to Dr Price’s secretary (Kath Nolan), in the Gaisford Teaching Unit at 09.30 hours on the first day of the Module. You will be provided with details of the introductory course, seminar programme, medical firm attachments and PBL arrangements. You will also be provided with a locker key (£5.00 refundable deposit) which must be returned when you leave RMCH.

Accommodation

Those students on Module One of Year 5 should be able to move into their accommodation over the weekend prior to commencing the Module. Please contact the Accommodation Officer in advance to say when you expect to arrive. Thereafter, change over day will be the last day of the placement. You must vacate your accommodation by 10.00 hours to enable the rooms to be cleaned ready for the next students to move in after 15.00 hours on the same day. Please make sure you return all room keys / swipe cards before you leave and leave the accommodation as you found it.
