Rotary Minute
Doug Slowski talked about the fight for Vimy Ridge – 100 years ago – April 9th, 1917. It was about bravery and sacrifice. It was a turning point in Canada’s history – all 4 Canadian Divisions were fighting together for the first time under a Canadian Commander. A successful attack on a heavily-defended position that had resisted all previous attempts by the Allies to take.
The Rotaract Club of Nanaimo
The Rotaract Club of Nanaimo is a university and community based group of individuals aged 18-30ish who are looking to make a difference in our city. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 6 pm on the VIU Campus (usually Bldg 250, Rom 308)
https://www.facebook.com/RotaractClubofNanaimo/
Four very enthusiastic young ladies told us a bit about themselves and their Club. In the fall, they had a lot of international students but now their active membership is about 10 – it fluctuates, especially during the summer. They run two fund-raising activities, one in the fall to support a local project and one in the spring to support an international project.
We are most welcome (encouraged) to drop in on any of their meetings.
Caitlin, Charlotte, Haley & Bobbi-Ann
POSSIBLE MIG PROJECT
AG Bev and Doug P invited us to join an international project proposed by the MIG (Mid-Island Group). The MIG is composed of all Rotary Clubs north of the Malahat and is supported by contributions from all ‘member’ Clubs. It gives small clubs the opportunity to participate in International Projects.
For next year, they are proposing another project in Ghana, building on previous successes there. This would see the provision of autoclaves and sterilizers to a hospital in the Sunyani and portable equipment for their outreach programs.

The best minds are young minds, eh:
Working as a pediatric nurse, I had the difficult assignment of giving immunization shots to children. One day, I entered the examining room to give four-year-old Lizzie her injection.
“No, no, no!” she screamed. “Lizzie,” scolded her mother, "that's not polite behavior.” With that, the girl yelled even louder, “No, thank you! No, thank you!"

On the way back from a Cub Scout meeting, my grandson innocently said to my son, “Dad, I know babies come from mommies’ tummies, but how do they get there in the first place?”
After my son hemmed and hawed awhile, my grandson finally spoke up in disgust, “You don't have to make up something, Dad. It’s okay if you don’t know the answer.”

Just before I was deployed to Iraq, I sat my eight-year-old son down and broke the news to him. “I’m going to be away for a long time,” I told him. “I’m going to Iraq.”
“Why?” he asked. “Don't you know there’s a war going on over there?”
